PCI express 3.0 backwards compatability?

I read a thread from 2012 about 3.0 and 2.0 compatability but im wondering if it is outdated.
I have this motherboard:
http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M5A97_LE_R20/
and im wondering if a Radeon 7850 or Radeon 7950 (both 3.0) would be compatible with a 2.0 bus?
