PCI-Express SSD Compatibility

Are there PCI-e SSDs that are compatible with an AHCI configuration on an older chipset? It's mostly out of curiosity, but I was wondering if there are PCI-e cards that can be booted from without nullifying the SATA slots on the motherboard. The system sports a LGA-1155 motherboard, and it'd be cool to figure out if it works or not.

Also what is the cheapest available PCI-e SSD that performs better than the Samsung 850 SATA SSDs?

Solution

LGA-1155 in a Dell Optiplex.
Not gonna happen.

That came out before that level of SSD came out. They don't speak the same language.
Even if there were a BIOS update to allow that (there isn't), it could only be used as a secondary drive. Not boot.
And still be significantly slower than the same drive in a new motherboard.

Not even close to be worth the money and hassle.

Which specific motherboard is this?

Hmm well I guess each motherboard is different. Even among older chipsets.
It's a Dell Optiplex 7010 MT 0GY6Y8
