PCIe 1x 2.0 vs SATA III

So I'm thinking of buying a NVMe SDD but my motherboard doesn't have a M.2 slot. I was thinking of running the NVMe through a PCIe 2.0 1x slot via an adapter. But I read that PCIe 2.0 speeds per lane are only 500MB/s. So I want to know how much of an improvement (if any) will this setup give me over a normal Hard Drive via SATA III(Which is my current setup).

Unless you can find some specific documentation that says it can boot...

What specific motherboard is this?

If your board does not have a native m.2 port, it almost certainly can't boot up from an NVMe drive.
And using it as a secondary drive is a waste.

Just get a regular 2.5" SATA III SSD.

My motherboard is the MSI H110M ECO. But you say it won't boot?

Unless you can find some specific documentation that says it can boot from an NVMe drive in a PCIe port, it won't.
