Pcie power sharing

So i recently upgraded my GPU, went from a r9 280x needing 8+6pin pcie power connectors to a gtx970 needing only 8pin power.

Now i'm wondering, i've had a asus rog xonar sound card being powered by a double molex to 6 pin adapter. Hideous. I'm wondering if the now dangling extra 6+2pin could be plugged in to my sound card to dispose of that molex adapter.

I've never seen anyone plug 2 different cards onto one single pcie cable and i'm wondering if it is doable without risks

I am sure there us not harm in trying. The adapter just feeds the card 12 volts. I am not even sure why the card needs extra power(older ones used a PCI to PCI-e bridge, maybe this does similar, but i do not see a bridge chip).

All the grounds and 12 volt lines go back to the same place on most power supplies(rails are split by current limiters).

The cable should be capable of reliably supplying a single card with two 8 pin connectors, or two separate cards with 8 pin connectors in sli/crossfire. Since the sound card is 6 pin you wont be maxing out the amperage for the line. If you tried to use y adapters to get more connections (from 2 up to 4) from that single cable then you run into issues.
