I have been following up the obvious answer that in SLI mode the top GPU always gets hotter compared to bottom GPU.
Today I found out that this is false for me because:

1. My previous GPUs were EVGA GTX 780TI ACX version.

I had them on SLI, the ACX cooler blows hot air all over the case and hence concluded that top GPU will be hotter so deal with it.

2. My current GPUs are EVGA GTX 980 (both reference cooler)

The reference cooler got exhaust technique (everyone is aware ofcourse)

NOW: I tried changing cards, top card always remains 10-15 C higher than bottom card.
Single card still got the same temp???

Now I don't understand either my mobo's PCI-E 1 slot has a problem or there is something else?

I'm making sure that the exhaust is not blocked by properly aligning to the case's PCI slot.

Also, I know people will say this is normal but I just want to ask again, 82 'C on both cards consistent when 100% load. Is this normal?

What do you guys think?

Are you running the top card as the primary, that is, is it the one you've got the monitor hooked to? If so, then that card is usually working more than the other card, which doesn't kick in until needed by your graphics demands. It's not about the position as much as the workload split.

Ah, never thought of it that way! That top works more than bot, but how come in MSI AB shows both card consistently 95-99% but temp of top is higher?

But your answer pretty much explains it still.

But that would be the case of non ref. coolers where they blow hot air inside the case while the reference versions suck from top of the card and throws from back?

Yeah top card is primary, cable from monitor is connected to the top. I wonder if i change the cable to bottom GPU and if that would make any difference?

To heat up top card bottom only need heat up PCB hot air will be sucked to top card :)
