PCIe slots different help covering slot?

My Phanteks cooler takes up most of the space on top of my Maximus VI EXTREME mobo first 16x PCIe slot, where there booklet says to put 1 VGA card... Because this is now impossible would It be ok to use the (A2) 16x slot instead or just buy a new cooler?

EDIT : Would this mean SLI is out of the question?

Yeah, depending on the graphics card you could lose up to 10 % performance at the very most.

Doesn't really matter what slot you put it in on that mobo, you have no chance saturating bandwith

Because they say put it in the top, but I might have to put it in the second as my cooler does a great job at keeping my 4770k at 4.4 turbo at 50 degrees, what about what ^ guy said about 10% performance?

Well, i don't doubt him. I just don't see how a 8x lane could be saturated yet. That board is made for 4-way SLI if i'm not mistaken. Doesn't lane 1-3 make for 2-way SLI there? Do a quick checkup in your manual, a bit rusty on the degradation on the bus speed here

yup that's why I'm so worried, because I cant get to lane 1 without touching metal on my cooler.... so I can use the second 16x PCIe slot (eventhough manual says top) but when it comes to SLI dual cards I'm boned.. xD

Ok, do this then. Take lane 3. Benchmark it and just see how it compares to stock build without OC on CPU/GPU. That should give you a pinpoint on throttle or not. My guess is that you will see the exact same result as 16x slot one

shouldnt I use lane 2? which is 16x? but what If I want to SLI...

10% performance loss is the ABSOLUTE WORST case scenario, more likely you will not lose anything.

Will eventually be a GTX 780 + was hoping to maybe SLI

Do not worry to much, if you feel your performance is lacking. Then try another cooler. But its fine with one card. SLI will be a little different, but try it and see. It really depends on the PLX that Asus uses to get those extra 2 PCI-e bandwidth.
