PCIE x1 card in PCIE x16 slot?

Hello I was wondering if I could put this

TP LINK WIRELESS CARD

in the x16 pcie slot of this

h81n motherboard

I have that slot sitting there without nothing. Is this possible?

No that's not possible.

The physical interface of that wireless card(and all wireless card have that interface) is PCIe x1 and the lenght of PCIe x16 is greater than x1 slot.

So that's not possible

Not true. You can actually use a PCIe x1 (or x4 or x8) card in a x16 slot. While not applicable in this particular case (what with the mini-ITX board and all that), just keep in mind that if you're currently using any other x16 slots, plugging a x1 device into a second x16 slot will take some of its PCIe lanes away.

From the Wiki page: "The lane count is automatically negotiated during device initialization, and can be restricted by either endpoint. For example, a single-lane PCIe (×1) card can be inserted into a multi-lane slot (×4, ×8, etc.), and the initialization cycle auto-negotiates the highest mutually supported lane count."

Yes, you can definitely install a PCI-Ex1 card in to any PCIEx1, x4, or x16 slot.

I'm still failing to see the problem. I've seen PCI-e Wireless cards in a PCI-e x16 slots before. What part of the physical interface do you believe will prevent it from fitting?

Yes it will.

Currently have a PCIe x4 RAID card plugged into a PCIe x16 slot and work without issue.

Does this mean any 1x, 4x and 8x card can fit into an 16x slot? I am looking at a dual cpu setup for video rendering and the motherboard i want has 7 16x slots only and i was worried that i wouldn't be able to use my WiFi card or my other 8x card.

Nearly a two year old thread. If you have more questions, please start a new thread. However, the answer to your question should be yes. Any numerically lower PCI-E card (x1, x4, x8) can fit within a PCI-Ex16.
