PCIe x16 and PCIe x16 (x4 mode)

Hello,

I have two pcie x16 slots on my mobo (Asus m5a97 R2.0) and in the manual it says one is the usual x16, and the other x16 slot runs in x4 mode. If I put my graphics card in the main x16 slot it blocks my smaller x4 slots where I am planning to put a network card in, so I decided to move my card lower to the x16 (x4 mode) slot, and everything seems to be working fine, and I now have space to put my network card in. However, how does this x16 (x4 mode) slot affect the performance?

yes. you will just have to do benchmarks to know how bad.

Depends on the card, something super powerful will be badly restricted by the x4 link, a R7 240 won't even notice the difference.
And BTW, it's a PCI-E 2.0 slot.

Right, it's a R9 270x.

As MalakiArtook says, the only way to actually quantify how much of a hit the card will take will be to run the card in both slots but I don't think a R9 270 will suffer too much.
