I am doing my fourth build with the leftover components and have a good Freesync only IPS monitor that I like alot... I want to pair the monitor with a proper AMD GPU..

besides this GPU, Which other GPUs should i look at for this setup ?

5500 XT is roughly equivalent to an RX580 which does have the full PCIe 3.0 x16, but I can't really recommend it. Driver updates seem to have stopped and most of the ones you can find available are refurb mining GPUs.

it seems like the latest driver for Polaris was released on 2024-10-01 which was yesterday...

But Eximo is right, game specific improvements are not being made for RX 590's driver updates...Can still play games south of 2023 though with it ?

I also happen to have an RX 590 but since I bought it used, I think I need a backup...I am looking at the 5500 XT....

I'm talking about 5500xt and not 590.
You said at the beginning that you would install 5500xt

If you have a RX 590 then the 5500XT is a downgrade so why even consider it.

Are you eyeing on the 4gb or 8gb version of the 5500xt? Running the card at pcie 3 8x speeds with 4gb vram, depending on game and how often 4gb fills up, would see memory bandwidth restrictions and poorer performance. 8gb version with less vram traffic would make more sense if were to remain on pcie 3 system.

I am looking at the 8GB version...I saw several YouTube benchmarks comparing PCIE 4.0 vs 3.0 with this card and the difference is negligible.

backup for what are you expecting the 590 to kill over?

Since I bought the 590 used, you never know, maybe it will stop working at some point? I don't know the history of the card.

Yeah apparently so, with 8gb retaining data longer pcie 3 8x would have a lesser impact. As per your OP title though, saying running the card on an pcie 3 16x board doesn't mean it'll run 16x despite it being a pcie 4 card right?
