PCL memory needs

What is a generous amount of memory to have in a printer?

Does an entire page have to be in the printer for reasonable
performance?

What are reasonable amounts of memory with PCL 5 and PCL 6?

I looked at the price of several printers. A $700 printer
might come with 32 MB of memory, but an additional 64 MB of
memory cost $400. Before I looked at the upgrade prices
I was hoping to put in 512 MB for $500, which would be
4 times is reasonable.

Alternatively, will anything besides HP stuff work
in an HP LaserJet 3380mfp? Viking Components has a 64MB Module
for HP printers for under $50, but it the 3380 isn't listed
as one of the printers that it works with.

If you list the printers we could help a little more! Memory prices can vary
by a good margin.I bought 256 megs for my Minolta for under $100,it was $350
elsewhere. Most printers do not benefit by 512 megs.My laser is a color with
duplex. If you are looking at a monochrome printer,512mb is way more than you
need.I would say a mono printer might benefit with 64mb total.Color
laser128-256mb.Color with duplex 256-512mb.As for the 3380mfp,96mb is
max.Check google. Just type in HP 3380 memory!
