Pentium 4 5X0 Now, or Pentium 4 in Q1 2005?

Hi everyone,
The subject basically says it all. Go Pentium 4 5X0 Now? Or wait until a new release in Q1 of 2005?

I'm upgrading, obviously, ASUS P5AD2-E Premium will be the MOBO i get. And i'm tired of buying a proccessor, just to get some revolutionary new advance released 2 weeks later ;).

Hence my question. Are there any HUGE advancements planned for the P4 in Q1 of 2005? Or would it serve me well to go ahead and get, say, a P4 560J now? I read that the P4 will come with 2Mb cache in 2005, but is that in the near (couple of weeks) future? Will it affect me that much? What's next for Intel? Dual-Core tech? What is that exactly? When will it be released? Is it worth NOT getting a P4 5X0 now, and waiting for?

As always, thanx for the advice!

I dont think dual core, or 64bit extensions are going to appear for at least 6months. 2MB cache could be sooner thought, but it wont be cheap and wont be worth it.
Is it worth NOT getting a P4 5X0 now, and waiting for?
It has never been worth getting a P4 5X0, they are pants compared to the Athlon64 line.

Well they may be, but i'm getting Intel for reasons... That don't need to be mentioned as there is no need for an AMD vs. Intel flaming war. So i guess for the purposes of this post, it's Intel only.

So in that case i suppose you're saying go ahead now then?

It's your money.

Feel free to waste it.

No can wait. I already have a Northwood, 2.8GHz, 533MHz FSB pre-HT. And i've had it for 2 years or so now, and it's not performing like i want it to anymore, hence the need to upgrade.

Sooooo my origional question P4 5X0 now? or a month from now? that's as long as i can wait. Will there be a difference is what i'm asking basically.

If it is urget to you, get 5xx now. You will have it on a LGA 775 which will allow you to upgrade the CPU later on.

The 2mb P4 will be 6xx btw.

The Inquirer has reported that the 6xx series will come out late Feburary 2005

According to that report, the 6xx series will also have Intel EMT64.

But anything can happen, so don't rely on that report too much.

EHHHH late feb, possibly LATER is a little too long... besides, it doesn't appear i'll be missing THAT much. Trading a 560J for a dual core later in 05 seems like a better deal to me...?

I agree with you that it would be better to get a 5x0 reasonablye now, and wait 6 months to upgrade to 6x0 whatever...and might try eBay to sell old chip, or do like me, they hang around on window sill as dust magnets.

might as well just do the 500 series now, relaly there isnt much innovation wise for intel until dual core in the second half of the year. if you must upgrade now and your only choice is a intel 500 series cpu, you dont leave yourself many options lol.

might as well go for it

No he doesnt he has a 2.8b not a 2.8c

I hope he doesnt want to go intel because he thinks there platforms are more stable.

Does anyone know what the heat output of the 2MB prescotts is gonna be? They cant be cheap for intel to make, cache takes up a hell of a lot of die space.

Well here's my deal, i have to upgrade soon... My PC now is, for lack of a better term, dieing due to old age... i'm getting more and more errors, hardware is stopping to work, yadda yadda (no, no viruses or other problems, pure hardware FAILURE).

I mean yeah, i could get away with formatting and waiting, BUT that doesn't address the issue of my PC just isn't capable of doing the things i want it to fast enough any more. I work in DCC (digital content creation) now, and will be even more when i graduate in a couple months. I rely on processor and video heavy programs like lightwave, MAX, maya, etc... all the time. P4 2.8b, 533MHz FSB, DDR266, and AGP 4x just isn't cutting it any more.

So if i'm going to be replacing the CPU, mobo, memory, and video card (which is going to be a workstation card), why should i waste ALL that money on old tech like a northwood based system? When i can get PCIe, LGA775, 1066MHz FSB, DDR2, etc... etc... and just switch out a proccessor in a couple months or a year? Esp now after xmass when i have some money i can spend on it, i'm 21, that money won't be there in 6 months, LOL.

I just wanted to make sure that i'm not missing some increadable revolution in 2-4 weeks. 2Mb cache doesn't seem incredable to me, and dual core is 6 months off AT THE LEAST. I know the prescott has heating issues, that's why i made another thread asking about cooling solutions for it, i'm gonna make sure i get it cooled properly.

P.S.
Jammy, nah it's not b/c of "stability", like i said i have reasons, everyone has their own reasons. I just don't see a point in listing them out and creating some kind of AMD vs. Intel flaming war. Like i said, everyone has their reasons whatever they may be, and i am DEFINATELY not saying any company or chip is better than the other, just that i'm going with P4 in this case.. that's all.

P.P.S.
Hey, would anyone in this thread happen to know if the P4 560J has:
Enhanced HALT State (C1E)
Thermal Monitoring 2
PRB=1

I wanted to make sure it does before i decide on that processor.

If you say that a P4 2.8B is "dying" then in your terms "alive" would be at least dual Xeon 3.6Ghz workstation with EMT64 and 4GB memory, at least.

That they do. That's why we all know not to hold our breath for those paper launches. My next upgrade is 06. 64 bit should be in full swing. Plus see what Intel and AMD have to offer for dual core.

yeah if a 2.8 system is hugely lacking for you now, going to a prescott lg755 system now wont pay big dividens, it sounds ot me like youd be better off saving for a xeon or opteron system. but since you prefer intel, then xeon. you could start out buying a single xeon cpu then adding one when you have the money.
