How does the Pentium D 925 compare to a Core 2 E6400 and X2 4400+. Just picked up a Optiplex 745 with a Pentium D 925 to replaced my failing athlon system. I just bought a core 2 E6400 on ebay for $10 including shipping to replace the D 925. I know the 745 is old, but I'm on a tight budget and the 745 was only $35.

Solution

Yes, Like I just stated, I misread. Was thinking 755. Which will handle the 45nm. It will run this guy here:

You can get a much better Core 2 on eBay for $10 than the Core 2 E6400. If you shop for a while you can get an E5700 or a E7400 both much better than a Core 2 E6400. And by the way there are 2 different E6xxx class cpu's One is the Core 2 the other is the Pentium E. For instance the Pentium E6300 is 2.8Ghz the core 2 E6300 is 1.8Ghz. Crazy I know but true. Pentium D is absolute junk. When Core 2 came out Intel saved the company. AMD had been making much better CPU's for years UNTIL Core 2. Since then Intel has dominated the Performance race.

My 745 only supports the E6300, E6400, E6600 and E6700 versions of core 2's.

Click on the Benchmarks links for graphical comparisons. The Core2 Duo E4600 is almost 3 times faster than the D925 and 15% fasten than the Athlon 64 x2 4400+, while the Athlon is about 2.5 times faster than the D925.

If you check the Intel Product details, both E6400 and E7400 CPUs are the same FSB speed and Max TDP, so there is no reason why your motherboard would not support the Core 2 Duo E7400.

If your source is the Dell Optiplex 745 specifications sheet, the reason it only includes up to E6000 series in the CPU support list, it's probably because the list was published when the E6000 series were the latest Intel CPUs and the page was probably never updated as the case is on almost every old system description you can find.

The optiplex 745 doesn't support any of the 45nm core 2's. I searched dell forms and it seams like the fastest CPU supported is the Q6600.

Sorry I read it wrong. Thought it was 755. If you want you can get a Optiplex 755 motherboard for $17 on eBay, new old stock. Pretty sure it's a easy swap. Then you can run any Core 2. If you want to go that route I can give you all the info you need.
