Pentium G2020 - Good enough for gaming?

Hey Tomshardware. I'm planning to get this cpu along with a radeon 7770. I have some questions:

1. Is it good for gaming? (e.g. BF3 Multiplayer)
2. Will it bottleneck the gpu?
3. Does my upgrade path look good if i pair the cpu & gpu with a ASUS P8B75-M LX PLUS? (Im on a budget.)

upgrade wise, you can only use sandy bridge/ivy bridge, which is being replaced by haswell next month. as for BF3 multiplayer, itll probably depend on the resolution. If you really want to maximize perf/$ at a budget, AMD's 965 BE is still an attractive low cost for a quad core.

edit: the pentium g2020 is still a good processor, its just that BF3 is one of the few games that prefers more cores rather than a strong single core.

But do you think the best i7 right now can handle games within the next 5 years? Cos i'm not gonna be doing some speedy work. Basically just gaming, schoolwork and maybe some video encoding like handbrake.

5 years, probably not. 5 years ago, CORE 2 QUADS's were the best and they cant handle many modern games on high details.

Ivy bridge i7 can probably handle games for at least 3 more years no problem

That's good enough for me. i7's are probably going to be dropping in the next 3 years, so yeah.

intel cpu prices dont drop much. they tend to keep their value until they more or less are non existant. for example, try buying a gen 1 i7 i series cpu

Around 550$ including OS. Also, availability will be different from an online store and in local stores here in the philippines. Just so yu know, im buying from pcx.com.ph. If you could reply to my thread in the systems forum, that would be helpful. :)

Thanks man. 500gb is enough for the hdd though since i have an external 1tb hdd i use for my movies, music, etc. Im also looking at this mobo: http://pcx.com.ph/elite-b75h2-m3-1-0.html Is it good?

EDIT: Also, is that case any good? I think ill be getting a 7750 since the gt 630 aint all that good. :)

When the budget is limited then the options are very few and you have to take what the budget "allows". Stretching the budget with 10% as best or less and can be tolerated.

It is better as is has USB 3.0, for instance

Could you list me other hompages as I would like to look from more than just one online store.

Unfortunately, I can't. Ive been searching everywhere and this seems to be the best place as it has good service and reasonable prices. What if I went with an athlon ii x2 250, then later on, get an fx 6100 once i have more money? It could save me money and ive seen an athlon ii x2 250 playing bf3 multiplayer with great framerates.

I don't think it's a wise idea however going with G1650 is a better choice and you can later upgrade to an i5 quadcore; the price between the athlon and the pentiums is small and the Pentium performance better. When you have the Pentium than try to increase the BLK from 99,9MHz to 104MHz than the It will work 2,704GHz. With G2010 you will be able to get up to 3.045GHz (BLK: 105MHz). Messing with BLK can cuase instability so you will do it at your own risk, if you do it.

I have updated my post where my recommendation build is. What I changed is the cpu to a pentium, upgraded the gpu to a 7790 which will perform well for it's price, the storage to a 500GB however I would still take the 1TB as is worth the extra ₱600 and I changed the case to an Antech One Hundred

Intel doesn't decrease prices by much. And as inventory decreases retailers who still have that i7 in stock may also increase the price above how much it costs today.

For example, a new Core 2 Quad Q9450 CPU (what's in my PC) costs $369 today. The normal selling price back in 2008 was about $320.

When it's overclocked (3.0GHz and above) yeah but not at stock frequency. It will beat FX4300 if they where on the same frequency. However think i5 is a better choice and it will give you better performance/$.
