Pentium g3258 or i3?

I've currently got a fx6300 but I want to get an Intel CPU for the upgrade path and gaming performance. If I got the Pentium I would buy the cooler master 212 evo and overclock which would come to the same price as a cheap i3. I'm plan to eventually get the i5 4690k and the one I buy will serve as a place holder until then. Is there much point spending a bit extra on a locked i3? I will primarily use this for gaming and general day to day use. Any input is appreciated :)

If you plan to eventually get the i5 4690k, save up enough for the i5 AND a z97 mobo. Until then, oc the fx6300 and stick with it. You will be fine with that fx than you would with an i3 or an overclocked pentium g3258. The i3 and the oced pentium will easily trump the fx in a single and two threaded games and applications, but the fx will remain fine. With multithreaded games, the fx will keep up or edge out the i3 and pentium, and with cpu intensive games like far cry4, the i3 and pentium will be crushed while the fx remain fine. In short, you don't gain much by getting a cheap intel now, and you're actually downgrading.

By the time you saved up enough, intel skylake will be probably out. It will not have significant performance gain...

Thanks. Does this count for overclocking any CPU?

Any mobo without off heat-sinks on vrm, anyway do not try OC Fx-8350 on this mobo but your FX-6300 will be ok 😉
