Pentium G3258 With Low End Asus MOBOs

So I read the news about the lower end ASUS mobos having updates that could support the Pentium G3258, and I tries searching for results but could not find one, so I made an account
and will create a thread myself.

Who has tried this with an H81 and never had a problem? Because my friend says I can overclock it to 4.8 GHz with just using the stock cooler. But I'm afraid it might not work out since my budget is really tight, I can't add anymore.

Yeah, your friend is bullshiting. You need a proper budget to get a proper computer.

First of all, on stock cooler, forget it. Second, at this point you need an overclocking enabled motherboard, although bios updates are already on the way for lower end mobos. Dont know a single one at the moment confirmed to have this new bios, though. At the very least, you will need a proper cooler and either a quality mobo or mobo with new bios.

I'd say FX 6300 or forget about performance CPU wise. And that's not even looking at you GPU.

The mobo is a ASUS H81-D, I saw the official drivers in the site that the latest version supports the Pentium G3258.

The videocard that I'll be buying is a Palit GTX 750 Ti StormX OC 2GB DDR5

Yes; support for running it. Overclocking it is a different matter. For one, the stock cooler won't cut it. You need some really good cooling solution for a 4.8GHz overclock. And secondly, the H81 motherboard does not have the power phase to maintain a stable 4.8GHz on that chip.

Thats the strange thing with this chip. It is cheap, supposed to be overclocked, but you can only do it with a good board and cooling. So, it does not end cheap after all, you might as well consider getting i5 😉

This is the main complaint I've seen with the 3258, yes it is a cheap overclockable chip, but it takes a $100+ motherboard to overclock a $75 processor. For the total price, you may as well get an i3 or possibly an i5.

Asus and GB appear to have released BIOS updates that support G3258 overclocking on H81 Chipsets making it a much more viable option.

A very interesting article. Makes the 3258 a much more likable option for a budget gaming PC, however, I'm still unsure what H81 Mobo you could buy new and pair with it, as it was mentioned in the article only certain companies are shipping with a Haswell-refresh CPU compatible BIOS, and without an older CPU to update it, it won't work at all.

I'd probably wait until this became a little more mainstream before I invested in it.

The Article discusses a Asus H81M-Plus so that's definitely one of the more popular choices covered. Asus have rolled out the BIOS update for pretty much all the H81M-XXXX boards. Its definitely in its infancy and would advise to check with the motherboard manufactures BIOS read me files to ensure support is definately there as the last thing you want to do is choose the wrong board.

I'm personally torn between the 750k and the 3258 for a new build at the moment. I'm leaning more towards the 750k because the boards are cheaper and their overclocking is "tried and true" as opposed to the 3258's "sure, it'll work...in theory."

I think in six months or so, the 3258 will have more overclocking options and confirmation on compatibility, but right now I feel like it is an unnecessary risk with an H81 board of any kind.

You can get to 4.4Ghz depending on the chip of course on stock cooling no problems. TomsHardware got to 4.6Ghz, but it was getting too hot, so they lowered the clock speed and voltage and got a stable 4.4Ghz easy without topping 80 degrees. Here's the link

Ok guys, this may be a thread from the dead... but I thought I should give the benefit of my experience.

First of all, GIGABYTE H81 boards with the latest BIOS are able to change the multiplier on the G3258. The base clock setting is missing and the maximum core voltage is 1.2v, good for an overclock of 4.2ghz on my chip.

Second - the stock cooler is just fine for this level of o/c - temps do not go above 70 under full load, and that's in a small mATX case.

Third - it isn't as easy as you think for Intel to turn off the overclocking option. They would have to either get you to install another BIOS (which could be rolled back) or push out a microcode update through Windows update (which could again be rolled back). Microcode updates are only loaded temporarily.

If you want an extreme overclock I would look for something better than a H81 and get a better cooler but if you are ok with 4.2ghz -ish, H81 and stock cooling is just fine.

I am on a tight budget and bought a Dabs deal -motherboard H81M-PLUS -G3258 processor - and Corsair Vengeance memory 8gb.The motherboard revision was 0807 and I flashed it to 2001.YAY!!!......er trouble is I cant work out how to overclock it.The multiplier is stuck at x32 so it is still at stock speed.Various websites have mentioned "so we overclocked it" without mentioning how they achieved it and I have spent hours trying to find an answer to no avail.......please help.....it would be much appreciated
