PentiumD & PSU... + random question

a PentiumD 830 cpu... would that have a much bigger hit on the PSU than say a Pentium 630?

- also, random question... wanted to order a Seagate HD...

It's a bare drive, OEM, from this site. Will that have the 5yr manufacturer warranty, or do you only get the warranty when you buy retail? that... and I can't find a retail version of the Seagate 400gb anywhere on pricewatch??

The 630 is an improved product, over say the 530. It seldom uses more than ~80 watts. The 830, has 2 cores, and uses 125+ regularly. Almost 50 watts on one rail (the 12v rail, I believe) could be considered a lot.

I wouldnt upgrad emy northwood 3.2 for a 630 thats for sure!!!
Maybe for 830D if you really multitask a lot.

I found northwood at 3.2 to be good enoguh for another year...

To my knowledge, yes, it will. But just in case, I looked it up on Seagate's website and actually found that they don't clarify this very well IMHO. But I did find what is hopefully the answer in their 5-year warranty FAQ.

<b>2. To whom does the five-year warranty apply?</b>
The five-year warranty applies to all customers who purchase drives either directly through Seagate (distributors), or through the Authorized Distribution channel. This includes Channel SIs, System Builders, Retail customers, <b><font color=green>and Bare drive customers who purchase through Distributors</font color=green></b>. There will be no changes to our OEM/System Manufacturer agreements that purchase product directly from Seagate.

PS - No I am not upgrading my comp to any Intel chip... a friend was wondering because he was contimplating a few different choices. I told him to go with the 3500+ Rev E. on an s939 mobo and to swap an X2 in later down the road... so thats what he's doing!

The confusion lies in

There will be no changes to our OEM/System Manufacturer agreements that purchase product directly from Seagate.

Some oems purchase drives, sans warranty, and supply thier own warranty, by purchasing extra drives. Thier warranty may only be 1 year on hdds, and does not cover units sold to 3rd party distributors. Without proof of warranty, only the minimul legal requirements apply.
