Penumbra black plague

I've been trying for hours to get penumbra black plague to work on my Windows 8.1 desktop. The game launches, but the mouse pointer is on and off the screen when I move it. If I'm lucky I can get the game to start, but it doesn't run right and it's unplayable. I tried adjusting settings in the default settings .cfg file but no luck. I verified the game cache through steam and tried reinstalling it. I read on other forums that this game works with windows 8, so I don't know what the problem is. My PC is running the fx 6100 with a radeon 7850

What do you mean it "doesn't run right" if it starts? I remember trying to get that game to work and the bloom was horrible.

It starts up and then there's a square in the middle of the picture that looks fine but all around it looks really blurry and it doesn't control right.

If I can get it to start again. I have to keep moving the mouse around until it points to start game. The mouse pointer disappears and reappears in random places.

Problem solved, the DPI settings had to be changed. I was unaware that something like that could affect a game so drastically. The Windows 8 trouble shooter fixed it for me.
