This will be my first attempt at building a system on my own and very thankful I found this forum. Hoping it will be as simple to build my own machine as this forum makes it sound! I am open to all suggestions.

This would be my wish list for this build:
I have a need for speed. I hate waiting so anything that will improve network performance, Internet page loading etc...

Definitely quiet, fast boot time-would like SSD to hold operating system.

Enough performance to allow for multi tasking. If I am recording audio I can't do anything else on my current machine without causing my recording to end up garbled.

I use a lot of external storage to carry data around so anything that improves copying times from desktop to external drives would be nice.

I maybe trying to wrap to much into one machine but would like this machine to be the "file server" for my home network allowing kids to mange their own music pulling from library on this machine.

Additionally, if possible, would eventually like to stream movies from this machine to TV's on the network through my WD live TV box.

Would like to have plenty of storage as well. Also for data protection I have been using a 1.5TB ext drive to back up current machine. This seems to be working fine but if I should be migrating to some sort of Raid setup vs a mirror back up I am open to that as well. Currently have about 600gb of files, music, movies.

Haven't made the switch to Blu-Ray yet but thinking it might be getting close. Currently have to DVD/CD write drives but seems I typically only use one of them..again open to any suggestions.

All this plus would like to build it with potential to be able to add more in the future and or upgrade in the future.

APPROXIMATE PURCHASE DATE: Would start buying components in the next week or so

BUDGET RANGE: $2000-$3500 After Rebates targeting $2500ish but also realize that may be unrealistic.

SYSTEM USAGE FROM MOST TO LEAST IMPORTANT: Crunching large amounts of Data in Excel 2007, Ripping DVDs, Converting Music/Movies to play on iPod, Archos, Tivo, Online gaming-Full Tilt, DDO, surfing the internet

PARTS NOT REQUIRED: monitor, speakers

PREFERRED WEBSITE(S) FOR PARTS: newegg.com, Tigerdirect but open to any site for highest quality and best price

PARTS PREFERENCES: Intel i-7, Widows 7 OS

OVERCLOCKING: Maybe like to if I can pull it off

SLI OR CROSSFIRE: Maybe -not sure I understand the benefits

MONITOR RESOLUTION: Dell SX2210 21.5" Full HD Monitor 1920 x 1080 at 60Hz

This is better suited for that:

CPU - Strictly a budget choice here. The 920 will overclock well past 975 levels .... but more expensive COU's also can be overclocked. The 930 should drop by Monday for same price as 920...can't link to the 930, so will do 920
Intel Core i7-920 Bloomfield 2.66GHz 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor $289

Memory - Memory - 3 x 2GB is all most need. DDR1600 for it's OC ability, no need to go higher unless you looking for 5 Ghz +. Lowest CAS # you can afford, best right now is Mushkin 998692's w/ the Ascent coolers but they don't stay in stick long.
CAS 6 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820226052 $270
CAS 7 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145286 $190
CAS 8 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820227365 $139

SSD - Can be done w/ your budget. King "today" is the Intel G2 - Antec case already has 2.5" adapter so retail version not needed.
Intel X25-M Mainstream SSDSA2M080G2XXX 2.5" 80GB SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) $220
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820167016

Hard Drives - Check out the performance charts and pick whatever 500 GB per platter drive performs best under your usage patterns. The 2 TB WD Black and LX from Seagate are good choice but at smaller capacities, you are limited to the Seagate 7200.12 or the Spinpoint F3. The 7200.12 excels in gaming, multimedia and pictures whereas the F3 wins at music and movie maker. See the comparisons here (copy past link in manually, link won't work in forum): $95 for a 1 TB

Heat Sink - For performance and ease of installation, the Prolimatech Megahalems fits both criteria. Here's what I'm putting in new builds Mega w/ IC Diamond TIM and twin Scythe PWMfans (make sure ya MoBo can handle the fan wattage). ($65 for the HS, $7 for TIM, $11 each for two PWM fans and $7 for a Y cable splitter).

If that's a budget breaker, look at the Xigmnatec S1283 or one of the others here:

pick a TIM from the top few here:

Optical - Plextor Model PX-B320SA Blue Ray Reader / DVD Writer w/LS OEM $135
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827249055

GFX Cards - To do DX9/10 Gaming at that resolution you can get "good" performance w/o lowering detail in most games with as little as a 250 GTS for $100
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/best-graphics-card,2521-4.html

DX11 brings a lot of detail so to maintain 30 fps in Dx11, you'll need a 58xx series for about $265 (5830) - $400 (5870)

I'd suggest that you take your budget into this article here and see where you wanna go.

Alright here is my proposed build. It should actually come in slightly under my target of $2500. I am rounding out at about $2,234. That is if I got everything I need. Its based mainly on recommendations by JackNaylorPE, Thanks Jack!!! Does this really cover everything or do I need other smaller items that I am unaware this being my first build. If anything below doesn't make sense please let me know as I am open to any suggestions. Again thanks for the input!

Well there is my fee ..... :0 Actually you can help me out.....I have the Enermax Magma fans which aren't PWM......little research told me the Scyth PWM's and the splitter doohickey was the way to go.....would like to confirm when you build it how well it works.

Still I would move off the 1 TB WD Blacks ....2 TB model rocks but the 1 TB's are kinda blahhh.

Alright I have been re-evaluating my build and have realized that gaming has become a smaller and smaller part of what I use my machine for. Main use will be photos, movies both home and ripping DVD's. Therefore I have tried to skinny my build down a little. I am looking to buy the parts in the next couple of days and build the rig this weekend. Here are my questions

1) Need input on a decent video card for $150 to $240 would like it to be decent for gaming but overall just want the best bang for the buck.

2) is there is anything that will help boost internet speeds/Page loads etc

3) based on above any recommendation on a wired NIC card?

4) I have thrown in some SSD to speed up load/boot times is 128GB to much? I originally had 80 GB but saw on another post here that 80GB was to little. Is the increased load speed justify the $$'s and would 80GB be enough?

5) Finally , wanted to see if anyone had an opinion on going with the
