OS Name: Microsoft Windows XP Professional
MotherBoard: Asus AV8 Deluxe Rev 1.xx
BIOS Version/Date: American Megatrends Inc. 1017.002, 14/11/2005
PSU: HEC 385AD-PT -> Total Output: 385W -> Intel Ver1.3 ready -> ATX 12v
Graphics: ATI Radeon X1950 GT AGP 256MB (Dual Screen) -> Driver: 8.421.0.0 28/09/2007 -> CCC: 2007.0928.2231.38404
Processor: AMD Athon 64 3500+ 2200MHz -> Driver: 1.3.2.0 27/05/2006
Memory: 1.50 GB

I keep my machine pretty well maintained and up to now I have been happy with performance but last week I upgraded my graphics card from the 9800PRO to the card specified above. In games I have noticed a reasonable increase in performance but in windows it seems as though performance may have degraded since the upgrade. I initially thought that this might be down to my PSU but I have not had any crashes or overheating problems. I have upgraded every driver I can think or including processor, chipset and graphics drivers. I ran 3DMark05 and got the following result:
3DMark Score 9318 3DMarks
CPU Score 129 CPUMarks

I was expecting higher from my graphics card so i still believe it should be performing better but my CPU was ridicules! Has anyone else got a CPU score that low??!

Could this be a Driver/BIOS setting/Configuration/Application issue rather than my hardware. I really want to get the most out of my machine because I don't think that is what I am getting. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I bought the card so I could play the latest games including DiRT. I have the Demo but performance is not great and I'm sure my system should be able to run it at 1024/768 without issue but it definitely struggles.

I am planning my next upgrade to be a new processor hopefully a AMD X2 4400+ as my Mobo is still hanging in there with a socket 939 but that might not be in the near future. Is this a good plan or do you think a new PSU would be a better upgrade at this point.

Please just ask if you need any further information.

3dmark05 is still pretty hard on older AGP systems. My older P4 system with 6800GS AGP only scored at best 4500ish.

With my new system, E4400 (2.8ghz when I tested) paired with 8800GTS 320MB, scored 15,300ish:

3dm05D.jpg

So I'd say if you want a better rig to handle todays games, you should save up to build yourself a new rig, whether is AMD's path or Intels path.

Edit:

Almost forgot to mention the 8800 GT cards in Nov should be good as well.

I realise a new machine would be best but I really want to get the most out of the one I have for another year or so. Especially as I've just bought a new Graphics card.

Well.. I've been in the same situation. I've upgraded my P4 2.66ghz, to a P4 3ghz. Even though I didn't spend much to try to get lil more out of that system, in the long run it really didn't matter. However, I'm still using it for my linux setup. So not all was lost in keeping that system running, with better hardware.

Not sure, but you might have something wrong. Here's my old system results I saved online awhile back:

3DMark05 Project Details

Doh.. above link doesn't work when I logged out.

3DMark05 Project Details

That one should werk.

My old P4 3ghz did score: 3442 CPUMarks

I tried to compare my old to AMD 2200mhz with X1950 pro:

Main Test Results
3DMark Score
(3DMarks)
5014 <-mine

8464 <-AMD
CPU Score
(CPUMarks)
3442 <-mine

3821 <-AMD

Heh, so your system scored higher then mine or the compared one, but yet your CPU score is wrong. That's kinda weird, unless that was a typo for 129 on cpu score.

I've upgraded my P4 2.66ghz, to a P4 3ghz

Huh?

That system is now a FC5 Linux machine. It originally had a retail P4 2.66ghz 533FSB CPU (5 years old stil have it). I upgraded it to a P4 3ghz 800 FSB CPU (Sept 2006) before the C2D (they were too expensive at the time) came out and the prices fell on it.

I've only had my new build for a lil less then a month, with the E4400.

I'm not sure, but I'd say you wouldn't get better performance.

Have you tried looking at DirectXDiagnostic Tool? Which is found;

C:\WINDOWS\system32\dxdiag.exe

That should tell you if you do have any DX driver problems.

No. Plau with the system a bit more before trying Vista.

Simply get an X2 dual core CPU - socket 939.

There are plenty still floating about - -should get it cheap.

FX60 - fastest ... expensive.
4800+
4600+
4400+ good price point - 2 X 1Mb cache ... can OC to 4800+ easy
4200+
3800+

The OPT dual core's will also run on this ... better silicon to OC usually too.

Hope this helps.

But if my PSU was a problem wouldn't I be getting more serious problems like crashes etc.. My system is pretty stable.

With a X1950GT being an underclocked X1950Pro(correct me if this is wrong...). So power should not be an issue at all....a X1950Pro only uses ~66 watts(5.5 amps).
That should leave plenty left for the rest of the system

I will go check the cpu score on a Athlon 64 3200+ and report back...

EDIT

Results
cpu : 4003 (Athlon64 3200+ 2200mhz socket 754 single channel ram Cool n Quiet : ON)

Check you task manager to make sure something is not sucking up all your spare cpu power. 129 IS low......

Also check with CPU-Z to make sure your running at the right speed. You can also try to disable cool n quiet in the bios to see if its related(maybe your cpu is staying clocked down)

I've got Asus Probe installed and that reports that my CPU is running at 2200MHz(Current Speed) as it should. Before I ran the test I closed everything I could including Anti virus etc..
My processor does seem to max out at 100% far too often. I don't know how accurate the CPU usage is on the G15 Keyboard but in games it is pretty much always on 100% and even some basic windows tasks can use all processor resource.
Is there any other way just to test my CPU? something must be wrong with it

Should I just get this processor looks good and I can get it for £44.64 Inc VAT seems like a pretty good deal! Will my machine cope with it in it's current state and will my stock 3500 CPU fan be suitable for this one:

Just noticed the ATHLON 64 X2 4400+ has 2 x 1024kb L2 Cache and this only has 2x 512KB L2 Cache. Will there be much difference in performance?

Will this CPU bring my PC at least up to a reasonable modern standard to keep me going for the next couple of years? Really can't afford a new rig at the moment.

For a new cpu you will have to check asus's website to make sure your current bios supports it(or see what bios you need and flash it). the extra 512k of cache makes a small difference(about the same as having the cpu run 100mhz or so faster)

First i think your should try to see why your cpu score is so low. Did you ever test with your old card? maybe there is some kind of a compatibility issue running the new card? Check asus for any such known problems or bios updates...

CPU usage of 100% while in games is normal. but if you get it at idle its not(unless you are folding. then its 100% all the time like me :) ).

Surley 3DMark Score 9318 means my graphics card is running ok.
It's the CPU Score of 129 thats worrying. I have had this CPU and motherboard together for almost 3 years. Could it be compatibility between the Graphics card and the CPU.

Just ran 3DMark again after closing a few more processes and I improved a little:
3dMark 9429
CPU Mark 130

I also ran it with an Energy Monitor in and my PSU never even registered above 185Watts so I don't think my 385W Power Supply is the problem.

Is anyone else running using the A8V Deluxe with an AMD 64 Processor and the Sapphire X1950 GT or similar?
