I have searched and found countless threads with permission problems, however none of the solutions seem to work.

I am the sole user and administrator of the desktop. I am randomly challenged by Windows 10 when trying to delete a folder that I need to give myself permission to delete it. I can create a folder and there is a 50% chance I won't be able to delete it. Of the ones I cannot delete I have checked the Owner info in the security menu and it says "Unable to display current ower" and I must have read permissions to view the properties.

I have tried to inherit the permissions and manually set them, however I cannot do much as I do not have read permissions.

Has anyone any ideas?

Hi Gareth,
When you initially click on the file or folder's properties, you will get a dialog box that looks like this.

Click on the General Tab, and make sure the checkbox shown with the red square around it, has a black dot in the middle. That makes it read only. If it's not black, it's not Read Only, which is required to continue to the permissions area.
Then click on the Security Tab at the top, (green circled), and then you will be taken to the previously shown dialog box where you click Advanced. As long as the Read Only is checked, then you will be taken to the Permissions dialog box that shows the "owner" and you can click "change" right next...
Hi Gareth, and welcome to Tom's Hardware!

Sounds simple, but In the control panel, Users, double check that you are logged on as an Adm, and not a standard User.

When you encounter a folder that says "Unable to Display Current Owner", right click and choose Properties, then the Security Tab and Advanced.
In the upper section, if an owner for some reason is not associated with the file or folder, next to it click Change.
Below the "Enter the Object Name" List box, click the Advanced button. Then click "Find Now"

That will give you a list of Owners to choose from.
You can choose the Users Group at the bottom, or your User Name. Click OK to close out, and you will have the permissions required to act on the file or folder.

Thanks for that. I am the administrator. I cannot Change the owner as "I do not have the permission to view or edit thia object's permission setting"

Under General the Read Only box is checked and if I try unchecking it I am told I will need to provide Admin permission, after continueing there is an error apply attributes to a file in the folder.

Take if one step further - instead of clicking on the General Tab, choose the Security Tab, on that tab, bottom right click on advanced, and that will take you to the "Advanced Security Settings" dialog, and there you will find the "change" link. Click on that, and follow my prior directions. Here is a clip of that step.
