Perplexing virus

Hello,
My computer will not allow me to open any programs except those that came installed initially. For example, I cannot open firefox, itunes, adaware, etc. However, I can open IE, paint, games. I also cannot install anything either whether in safe mode or not, even if I change the exe name. I checked the processes and there is nothing out of the ordinary. Lastly, I tried a restore and nothing helpful came from it. I appreciate the help.

OS reinstall do you have your os cd ?

How much time have you already spent searching for the answer? It takes only a little while to backup your important data and reinstall windows. It's always the faster option.

If you can't, or don't have the option to wipe it and start over, the usual advice is to

a) Download RKill
b) Download Malware - antibytes
c) Download a free antivirus scanner

Run them in order and it will solve a virus problem, if it is a virus problem.

I realize that I could reinstall windows and do have the cd, however I was trying to figure it out anyway. It bugs me that I have to reinstall and wanted to try to fix it without. Thanks for your time though.

dont bother, if the virus is really that bad then you will never be 100% sure that you got the whole thing. If you are that compromised then it is time for a reformat.
