In some instances, yes.
I play on persistant worlds, one in particular called Bruehawks in the
Role-Playing channel.
although that server has taken a major switch in how it's being "run" by the
online DMs(meaning that they're cheating their arses off and generally not
doing anything constructive)
I am in the process of creating my own server that will be based on Robert
Asprin and Lynn Abbey's Thieves World series of books.
a persistant world is the goal, meaning that you will create a character on
the server and you will partake in that characters life....meeting NPCs and
other PCs....forming alliances and making a life for that pc you create.
Then when you log in next the world may have changed somewhat depending on
who does what.
I.E. if you kill off a particular merchant, that merchant may not be there
when you come back online because he is "dead" so another may take his place
or something like that.
or you burn down a tavern or house, the server builder will most likely take
that building out on the next update to represent your characters impact on
the "world"
That's what a persistant world is....a game where you have an actual impact
on the things around you. Death is a very real possibility, so if you kill
someone elses PC....they're dead (unless they somehow manage to be raised
from the dead...alternatively the same could happen to you) so you will pick
up where you left off and things may have changed while you were gone.
There will be an ongoing storyline you may be invloved in that may take a
long time to complete...one way or the other, and won't be able to be done
in one night.
I am planning on using the Thieves World idea with my DMs (once the server
is ready to be posted to the net)...meaning that where one DMs story leaves
off...another may take up the reigns and continue it, or branch a new story
off that.
