Hello. Having read up on technology and played on a mid ranged system output to a 22 inch Dell IPS monitor, it is almost time to upgrade significantly. My goal is greater gaming immersion, everyday computer tasks and movies.

The games played will be fully modded Skyrim, modded Morrowind (with Overhaul package) , Elder Scrolls Online, and perhaps others.

I'm in the process of building a better PC. It will be , I think, sufficient to the task of running Nvidia 3dvision smoothly (a gtx 970, possibly SLI in the event of 3d vision, combined with an OC'ed (4ghz or so) pentium Anniversary edition dual core cpu.

Display option 1 :

24inch LG 24GM77, 144hz (3d ready) monitor for $300

an additional $100 is assumed to cover the Nvidia 3d glasses. A potential though uncertain(pending further feedback from the right honorable gentlefolk of the forums) necessity is an extra $320 for a second GPU to support smooth frames (50-60 fps PER eye).

I 've heard that the viewing angles are not great. But according to pro reviews, this LG is the best looking 3d capable monitor, with better colors than the competition.

cost - $620-750ish depending on GPU needs

Display option 2:

mid ranged 50 inch tv, probably an open box model.

Cost - $400

One benefit of the TV is that it will be good for movies, the monitor , not so much (if i want to lay around). Also, cheaper , since SLI wont be needed (if it is needed). On the other hand, I have heard rave review about Nvida 3d vision

Is 3d THAT worth it to go all in on a system? Skyrim? Morrowind? I could always return the items and try another option.

With the obvious caveat in mind, the subjectivity of beauty, I value your opinions, since getting into 3d is no small undertaking.

In a sense I have your options. I have a 50" HDTV and an Asus 24" VG248QE (3D) gaming monitor. I don't find my self using the 3D much. And I do use the 50" HDTV from my recliner often. I do like my gaming monitor. The 144Hz monitor is a great plus. It gives the display an extra smoothness that is hard to describe. The mouse pointer seems almost frictionless (like it is sliding on ice). The viewing angles are not a problem for me. This 144Hz monitor is very bright, and the key to good colors is to turn the brightness down. And the display color profiles (available on-line do help).

And I have the Asus GTX 970 graphics card (which is great by the way).

Terry4536, the 2d smoothnes you speak of rings a bell because I briefly tried an older generation 120hz a while ago and came away impressed by the smoothness of even navigating Windows desktop! But at the time the picture quality was quite lacking in other areas. So now that we're at the next generation (call it the second if you'd like), of high refresh rate monitors, I took the plunge and ordered the LG 144hz and by early next month will let you know how 3'd vision runs with a single gtx970. With Best Buy's warranty I could effectively trade in this one after it befell an unexpected tragedy, and put towards a 3rd generation 3d monitor (which to me would be a 30inch+ IPS, 1440p, 120hz+) hopefully within 2 years.

I'll update you in the near future. Good day.

The difference is that the LG 24GM77 is a TN panel and the ASUS ROG PG278Q is a WQHD panel. The LG has 1920 x 1080 as opposed to the 2560X1440 on the Asus. And it does it while maintaining a 1ms response time and a 144Hz refresh rate on the display. So basically you get a great gaming monitor that is still a great 2K monitor for videos. But like you said it costs another $500.

Have fun with you new monitor & graphics card.

Ah. I did not know that. The 1440 explains the price difference, making the 27 inch Asus the most desirable for me as well. Would love to try Elderscrolls HD texture packs on such a high res. Once the market drives down prices in another year or two, I will look forward to upgrading (hopefully 1440 120hz+ IPS will be out).

Thanks for the tip. I'll post an update in a few weeks when I get the 970.

Yeah, it would be like a very good HDTV with all of the gaming monitor features mixed in Hopefully the price will come down, because I know I can't afford an $800 computer monitor. My Asus VG24QE is going to last me for a while.
