Hi guys,

First may I thank you all for your kind words and wishes.
This year has been very hard for me and the early part of next year will
not be easy, as I’m going to have to go to court and try and find a new
home but I’ll work through it.

I have completed my first weeks work and boy oh boy it wasn’t easy.
Day after day, we’ve been ridding the world of rats, mice and
cockroaches!
All very different techniques from the ones I have used in the past.
Bait station after bait station has been checked and replenished if need
be.
Sticky boards, RADAR units (these seal in a mouse and then release CO2,
very useful in toxin sensitive areas and somewhat space age equipment in
the battle of man verse mouse). The days are long and hard, up at 6am,
meet trainer at 7:30am (hours drive away, I can not complain my boss
gave me a brand new Vectra (04 reg!!) ). Do the days work and finish at
5pm, then it’s off home, bit to eat and study the days home work
questions, complete questions and read manuals until 11pm or so. Every
Monday morning I have a test on the weeks work, if I fail “I’m out!” and
so that is how it will be for the next seven weeks and on the eighth
Monday my final exam (which will be marked by an external body).
All in all, it makes the DSC1 child’s play!

Have a great Christmas and have plenty to drink, eat and above all enjoy
a days out shooting!

Sounds tough! Is it too early too ask if you are enjoying it? Glad though
that things have come together.

You'll be glad to know some of your advice doesn't fall on deaf ears and
I've had an enjoyable day with our local clay club. First time shooting DTL
and first competition. The thing that made the day memorable was the
friendliness of other members to a newbie to the sport. I haven't met such a
like minded bunch of folks in years. I had turned up wanting to help and
watch and learn but they had none of it and an instructor stood with me,
leant me his gun and helped me through the competition. Though yesterday was
the first day for me I am sure it won't be the last.

As for the scores......... well I didn't make a complete fool of myself!

It’s excellent! And the pay is more than I can get in electronics!

Good on you! DTL was the first discipline that I started with and I
really enjoyed myself.

As for score, who cares? It’s all about enjoyment and it’s a great way
to learn the ropes with a shotgun but watch out for both end stands, L-R
crossers are hard :)

John,

I wish you well in your new career. There is big money in pest
destruction provided you can get all those little pieces of
paper.

These days, everyone involved in the food chain needs to be
certified "pest free" and you will be the man with the rubber
stamp! Yippee!!<G> Money for old rope! Do you need a grunt to
carry your poison box?

From my experiences of Rentokil, you should find the
examinations a breeze. I "inherited" the pigeon traps Rentokil
had been using on my patch for years until they were sacked.
These were obviously supplied as a flat pack for the operator to
assemble.

They were probably sacked because they did not catch many
pigeons. Not surprising really as whoever assembled and
attempted to use the traps previously had put all the funnels on
back to front!!<vbg> I gather they were charging a four figure
sum per annum for the privilege too!

Megga bucks, it really has surprised me how much people are willing to
pay :)
I guess these days’ people don’t know how to get rid of mice and rats.
The local councils will sort rats out FOC for private customers but as
you say businesses these days are pushed into PPS by the environmental
inspectors.
The average contract for a PPS is around £5k (all pest companies).
Then you have fly units (UV light units) and all sorts of things, its
big business.

B&Q, IKEA, (all the big stores), the Police, the Government and more.
The poisons are quite good, Rentokil make their own, which are slightly
better than the average. Certainly makes short work of rats and mice.

Just took my first exam, 100%!!! Pass mark :) (very happy).
The problem is that I have to know about every sort of pest you’ll find
in the UK but insects are something I know nothing about.

£130 per hour (I believe) for rats and mice.
Pest prevention service is where the money is, existing pest problems
are hassle.
These days I think rentokil are a little more careful of which jobs to
take on and which jobs are less cost effective. Rats & Mice are easy
prey and an easy job if you know what you’re doing, wasps & flies are
easy and fast jobs. Cockroaches are big money and some like the German
cockroach are very difficult to control, again big money pest. Gassing
using Phostoxin is another costly job. Rentokil is expensive but hey you
gotta pay for the best :)
The thing with Rentokil is that they has so much back up, the other pest
cont. companies will always fall short.

Thanks Derry!

Hi Pan,

I have a comms bias. Did you go to LLandaff tech? Colchester Av. ?

Hi John,

No not llandaff, cardiff Uni. I am currently working for a telecoms
manufacturer. Name begins with Pan (guess who ?)

I used to work for AB electronics some years ago.

Understand you are very busy right now, but pls don't forget Rudry.

I know but I thought they had gone under?
Do you know Jason Grew? Mike Farrel?

Not far from me.
To be honest I did my stint in the industry (I worked for Race a long
time ago) and I could not hack factory work. I need air, space and acing
muscles :)

I haven’t forgot about Rudry but right now, everything has gone on hold
(even the problems with my house/ex-family). I have to pass an exam
every Monday (next Monday _should_ be in the bag). Over the next few
weeks I will be covering cockroaches, stored food pests, flies and the
like. These are the problem pests for me, as I know nothing about them
what-so-ever, so I guess after Christmas it’s going to be make or break
time and it just so happens that’s when my ex-kin are going to start
putting on the pressure.
