I recently did an upgrade on my heatsink from corsair h80i to phanteks PH-TC14PE, hoping to see the temp to drop for like 10 deg something. However, some really weird things happened. First off, just after I finished installing the air cooler, I did a stress test on 4790k @4.6GHz(I did this because this cooler is said to be really good). The result was absolutely amazing, giving me around 70 degrees. I was quite happy about this and then I took the two fans off the h80i and installed them as case fans. After a reboot, I did another stress test, the result, however showed that the temp was around 85! I was shocked. To try to figure out what could be the problem, I did the following things:
1. I took off the corsair fans and re-tested, and got around 83 deg
2. I thought I might not have applied thermal paste correctly, so I did it again---same result
3. I also checked the fans settings to make sure they are running at full speed.
4. I reverted the cpu multiplier to 44 and 45, only to see that the temp is around 75 and 80.
Whatever I did, I couldn't get the result as the first run..... This led me to wonder if I was going nuts so that i read the wrong numbers at that time?!
Some things I discovered during the tests:
1. The core temp shot up when I hit the start stress test button. I don't know if this is normal, cause corsair h80i behaves the same.
2. I found the heatpipes are not hot (about 30 deg i guess), whereas the cpu is 80 deg. This indicates maybe the heat transfer rate is not high? The heatpipes on my graphics card gets really hot when gaming, which is an indication of good heat transfer.
My configuration:
Case: corsair C70
CPU: i7 4790k
GPU: Asus gtx 770
cooler: Phanteks PH-TC14PE with 3 fans
Mobo: asus maximus vii hero
temp monitor: Core Temp
Stress test: AIDA64
Could somebody think of any reasons, or what went wrong? Or I am just expecting too much from this cooler? Honestly, I would tend to trust the quality of phanteks, so i guess there must be something wrong. Those having similar configurations, what are you temperatures? Please help me analyze the problem, many thanks!
