I have a amd phenom 9750 quad core 2.40 ghz and would like to update it to the phenom 2 x4.dont know if the motherboard supports it or not. it is a dell insprion 546 mini tower.this ia all I can find on the web so far https://forums.anandtech.com/threads/will-a-dell-inspiron-546-handle-a-phenom-ii-x4.2207554/

Solution
I'm going to guess, based on the other thread that the first anandtech thread linked to, that it does not work with the original Dell motherboard.

Also, unless you're getting the Phenom II CPU for free, or almost free, it's not worth the money or effort. Set that money aside until you have enough to get a modern platform.

Very bad guess, sorry for spoiling a party, please no offense.

1. As it was noted above, Amd phenom 9750 is, indeed, 125 watt CPU.
2. Dell Inspiron 546 was sold with AMD Phenom II X4 945
3. Those are confirmations for Inspiron 546 installed Phenom ii x4 CPUs
AMD Phenom II X4 955 http://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/7996518
AMD Phenom II X4 965 http://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/7925137

4. Based on above confirmations, I would suggest AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition, it is as well 125 watt CPU, and it is possible to overclock it, but massive cooling upgrade will be required.

Anything else I can help you with?

I am not questioning this statement - correct. Phenom 965 BE was made in 3 versions, one 95 watt and 2 125 watt.

I personally went through all this with my Signature Inspiron 570.

However, since original CPU is 125 watt, Dell stock cooler will support Phenom II x4 125 watt CPU.
Aftermarket cooling would not be easy at first, until we can figure out how to attach aftermarket cooling to Dell motherboard.

Starting with Inspiron 560 and 570 Dell adopted LGA775 motherboard back plate for CPU coolers for many Inspiron generations to come, even when Intel socket was changed, Dell was continuing using LGA775 size motherboard holes for CPU coolers. Which is making relatively easy to improve cooling (if you know the subject as I do).

Building 775's and phenom 2 setups was in my hey day. I work in a building that employs 7,000 people and I had them lining up wanting PC's built. Things have cooled off since then but they were "fun" times for building PC's. (Prob built 150 - 200 PC's in those days). I was just stating he should probably make a little effort in trying to find a 95w version first.
