Phenom II 955 OC issues ...

Hey there .. I have a Phenom II 955 .. and I want to do start learning to/trying OC'ing. I've been working with PC's for years now but I've never really tried to OC my CPU much. VGA cards yes .. but CPU's and such .. not so much. So yeah .. going by all the reviews online, I should be able to get up to around 3800MHz at stock voltages. However .. my problem is .. while I am waiting on my new cooler to arrive I wanted to try to OC a bit and just see if I can get some extra speed now for my benchmarking runs (testing my new 5870) and well .. I can't even get it to 3400MHz! Crazy .. because I even tried bumping up the voltage even up to 1.4! It just won't boot! I have to clear the CMOS and re-set all my BIOS settigns again. It won't even get to the inital startup screen .. so yeah .. I was hoping someone might be able to help me out and get this thing OC'ing like it's supposed to.

The CPU will run at 3.4GHz., so it's likely the RAM (not limited to) holding it back. Set the RAM speed to a lower transfer rate or at least adjust the RAM to Mfg. specs including speed (perhaps a lower value than rated), voltage and timing. With the stock cooler heat will become an issue very quickly.
 
Well, I tried tweaking my RAM settings but still won't even POST. I don't get it. My RAM is actually DDR3 1600 but I am running it at 1333 so I can get better timings and such. The reccomended voltage is 1.85 .. and I am running it at 1.93 instead ATM but that did nothing either.

I imagine there is SOMETHING in my BIOS that I need to adjust but I don't have a clue where to start! My system specs are in my siggy. If anyone can help me get this thing OC'ed even a little bit I would be very greatful. I KNOW it's very capable of 3.4GHz .. and even 3.8 at the right voltages. I just want to get STARTED .. and if I can do that .. I should be able to tweak it from there >_>
 
It's not showing up so here are my system specs: Phenom II 955 BE, 4GB Mushkin DDR3 1333 RAM, Sapphire Radeon 5870 (cypress XT) MSI 790GX/G65 mobo, Xigmatek 650W (19A/4 rails) PSU, 250GB WD Caviar HDD, 500GB Seagate Barracuda HDD.
 
Hi jsh I just OCed my 955 and the way I did was get ram stable first and check it by running prime 512k test hardest on NB/ram. Once its stable start OCing cpu. The highest I chould get was 3.4ghz @ stock volts so just the warn you dont expect 3.8ghz without upping the volts. Hope this helps Shawn
 
My ram is allso mushkin 996657 it didnt stable to 1.94volt at spec timings, specs say 1.85 to 1.95 and I am at the high end.
 
hi there try amd overdrive i used it today set x18, cpu vid to 1.3750 witch is .250v over stock ht ref clock at 200 and got 3.612MHz with a 30c-31c idle and 45c-46c on Intelburn test V2.4 but i am using a Corsair H50-1 Cpu cooler
 
PII X4 955 will not overclock too much at stock voltage. With a .025 voltage bump I was able to get a 400Mhz overclock. At 1.42V I'm at 3.72GHz stable.

The PII X4 955 limits memory bandwidth at 1333Mhz. I was surprised by this as well. However, your timings should not be effected by this.
 
Just for curiosity, Do you disable the Cool and quite?, I have the same 955 @ 3.8GHz with 1.44V and x19 in the multiplier. And you can get the 3.6GHz with the stock voltage and x18 in the multiplier, with the stock heatsink and max 60C (depends of your case and airflow)
 
My 955 is stable at 1.4375V @ 3.8ghz, 1.5375V @ 4.0ghz and 1.55V @ 4.1ghz. I don't usually go up to 4.0/1, but 4.0 stays stable, while the 4.1 does BSoD sometimes.

I have the same RAM and I use it at 1333mhz with 6-6-6-18-24 timings, it's stable at 1.85V for me. This seems to work faster than 1600mhz with 7-7-7-20-27 timings.
 

Like I said, I don't usually go that high and if I do, it's just for fun/benching. I don't keep it for long periods of time because I know that it's going past the safe zone.
 
I was having a bit of difficulty myself with my friend's 955 I just put in last night. Then again I completely forgot to check out the settings on my ram. Is 1.5 V really the safe voltage for the AMD cpus, or just the 955?
 


1.5V for all AMD processors, not only for the 955
 


I have used 1.5325v at 4.150Ghz and it was fine. AMD over exaggerates when they say 1.5v, its all about having the correct voltages (in general) and temps to attain a safe limit when it comes to overvolting, meaning if you have the correct CPU/NB/vdda/HT/NB voltages and your temps are better than normal then you can go up to 1.55/1.56v on the CPU and you should be fine.

How do you think the 965 was able to reach 7Ghz @ 1.8v? 😉
 


Yea, but i don't have NL for OC my 955...i'm using the stock cooler...
 
Oh, 1.5V and beyond is a no-no, if you're using a stock cooler. Me and OvrClkr have big aftermarket coolers, so we're okay going past 1.55V.
 
yea, with the stock cooler you cannot give the CPU much voltage =)

The V8 isn't as great as newer coolers though. Even $30-$40 coolers can outperform a V10. What kind of case are you using?
