Phenom II x3 720 BE

Hello everyone hope you have had a great day so far!

I need help with a minor thing in overclocking my CPU

My specs are:

Corsair 650W PSU
Gigabyte MA770T-UD3P AM3 socket MOBO
Amd Phenom II x3 720 Black Edition CPU
4gigs of 1333mhz Ram Memory DDR3
A Sapphire Radeon 4890 2gb GPU
Samsung Spinpoint 7200RPM HDD 400gb
Samsung (something something) DVD Reader/Burner
A Good old Cooler Master Centurion

There is everything, some is sure to be irrelivant but it's just for the looks =)

OK so here's the deal, since i got the Black Edition of my 3core amd Phenom II it means my FSB is open for adjustement. In bios the normal FSB is set to x14 and gives a GHZ of 2.8. Overclocking my cpu trough the FSB to 3.2ghz was no problem, it was just to adjust the FSB from x14 to x16, i can go to 3.3ghz when i have FSB 16.5 aswell with no problem.

But the problem is when i set the FSB to x17 and get's a score of 3.4GHZ my computer get's bluescreens after some time.

I've read many threads stating that clocking the 720 BE to 3.4ghz this way with no voltage adjustement what so ever should really be no problem at all. But... for me it is =/.

The things i want help with is
Step 1: overclocking it to 3.4GHZ with maybe some voltage adjustement if it really is necesarry
Step 2: I want to know what the "max" ghz it should be overclocked to with voltage changes, for example on neoseeker.com i read a thread of a guy who OC'd it to 3.7ghz with a minor voltage adjustement (From base wich i think is 1.5 to 1.536 and a FSB of 18.5)
Step 3: A very reliable temperature reading software
Step 4: A very reliable cpu and memory stressing software

Oh i almost forgot to mention that i've overclocked my GPU before i did this

Normal Settings:
Gpu Clock: 870MHZ
Memory Clock 1050MHZ

My Settings
Gpu clock 950mhz
Memory Clock 1125mhz

I wonder if my "bluescreen of death" only is because of my cpu or if it have something to do with my other specs aswell

From 2.8 to 3.4 it's a 600Mhz jump so voltage change should be needed...
I have a phenom II X2 550 and it is stock clocked @3.1, I can only overclock it to 3.6 without a voltage boost...some people have good luck overclocking because they have a good motherboard/chipset or a good chip because they got lucky...don't be disappointed your system is great and your overclock is normal. When you add voltage add it in increments of .025V until your system is stable. A reliable stability testing program for both CPU and RAM is Prime95, google it to find a download. A reliable temperature monitoring program is speedfan. And a special stress testing program for RAM is memtest86. If you have any more questions post them up here, but for now good luck!

thanks for the help, i managed to clock my cpu to 3.6ghz now running stable with stress temps of only 62c at full load wich is great for a stock cooler, if i buy a aftermarket cooler i could probably increase more, but i'm happy for the result now =) i had to pinch the voltage up to 1.550 to make it run stable and nice, wich means 0.050v increase

good job but... thats a whole crapload of voltage for only 3.6. i can get mine to 3.7ghz stable with 1.44V
see if you can increase the clock a wee bit more, put all that voltage to more use

^ thanks. I did what you said, i lowered the voltage to 1.50 volts and i acctually could get it up to 3.7ghz stable with a lower temp then i had with 3.6 =) 60c load

btw 1.5 wasnt normal as i said cant remember what it was now as i've changed it

Cba to reset cmos to check lawl not even open my handbook =)=)

^1+ make sure to do what overclkr said. or atleast keep them saved in a document. my gigabyte mobo lets me save my settings but i like to keep it on window as well.

yeah i found that the original settings was 1.250v, it stood in the bios somewhere i knew i've seen it before. Anyways i've took a note and planked it onto my wall to so i can see it if my system have a failure again. Thanks for all the help guys =)
