Currently loadout;

Phenom II X6 1045T @ 3.2Ghz
NVidia GTX 480
8 Gigabytes DDR3 1600Mhz
Rosewell Green 80 Plus 680W CPU

Wish to soon to be;

FX-8320 @ Stock
AMD R9 290X\290

Which should I upgrade first, the GTX 480 or the Phenom II?

I usually play Arma 3, Total War, and Warthunder.

I wish to have the best FPS via Arma 3 in multiplayer.
Total War framerates are meh. 30 FPS maximum on ultra.
Warthunder I usually hit 40ish FPS on ultra settings.

Core for Core The K10 Architecture is more powerful than Bulldozer and Piledriver , but at the cost of much higher TPD and less overall efficiency in some applications. If you take a look at Tom's CPU hierarchy article , it says a CPU should be a 2 tiers ahead . This is subjective IMO. Depending on what you do with your PC you may not ever need an FX 8320 as a replacement for the Phenom II. If you can get it overclocked high enough than maybe you should get it as AMRA III is CPU bound and not as optimized as it could be.. If AMRA III and Day Z and other CPU Bound games is what you'll be playing then consider an Intel CPU, i5 45** or 46** , ie the i5 4670k. ..Something tells me that in all likely hood that won't happen, considering the price of new MB, CPU to a FX 8320.

I would wait if you want to buy a top tier GPU. AMD is going to release the R9 390X soon, and knowing AMD they will not cost as much as it could. This could push Nvdia's Pricing down, In Most of the 900 series.
