In most games, the i5 is stronger. There are a very few in which the FX is stronger. The differences are often more visible in benchmarks than while sitting in front of the PC playing. Typically, the graphics card makes the most difference in performance on a gaming PC. The i5 also uses a lot less power. As you can see from my .sig, I have two decent machines, one an i5 and the other an FX. There is nothing I can play on one that I cannot play on the other. The i5 feels a little smoother in some games, and did even when I had a HD7970 with the FX, but the difference is not remarkable, and I had more background software running on the FX.
