Interested to see what you think here:

Need help building an upgraded system around a 4070ti, sold my old system 5600 / cheap b450m / 3060 12gb.

I play games at 1440p and usually cap the frames at 120 unless it's a competitive online game. I want to do some light video editing, that would be 4k at the highest.

Can't decide what I want to do and bought 2 platforms, just have to decide what to keep, I've got 32gb cl16 3200, and a Peerless Assassin 120 SE. I need to pick one:

5700x - $170
x570 asus tuf wifi - $100

12700k - $260
z790 d4 gigabyte aorus elite - $150

Basically, is it worth jumping to LGA1700 for the better board features and upgrade path, codec support? Or, just ride the 5700x until it's upgrade time again.

I basically go from a $1150 system to a $1300 system with the i7.

Appreciate Your help.

LGA 1700 isn't much of an upgrade path if at all. If the 2 gen cycle continues the next Intel processor will be a new socket. So you could go LGA1700 it's just your upgrade path will include a new board down the line.

Same with AM4. It's dead.

That's why I went AM5.

That makes sense esp for a gaming focus.

I just hear about the extra cores and intel quick sync making a big difference for editing. Otherwise id just get a 7600, b650 for about the same price as the i7 setup.

I know in gaming both these will perform pretty much the same. I used the 5600 with the 4070ti for a bit and was happy with it at 1440p, just wanted a better board for wifi/bt and g4 m.2s. Then this intel idea comes into play.

Well in addition to the previous mentioned AM4/LGA1700 being EOL another reason I with AM5 was the much lower power draw and thermals. Those high end Intel processors get pretty toasty. This is my first AMD build since 2001... just felt like the right time to jump ship.

As for editing... I don't think Intel would be that big a difference... but haven't tried it on their new processors so can't say. What I can say is I'm editing/encoding 4K and 6K videos in mere minutes on my 7950x3D... which is a lot faster than the time it took on my previous 7700k and 10900k builds.

You're inaccurate. Raptor Lake Refresh (which will be coming as soon as 3 months from now) will still be using LGA 1700.

I'm not saying it's a better upgrade path than AMD, I'm saying it's longer than you think.

I'm not talking about rehashes... I'm talking about 14th gen.

Raptor Lake-S Refresh

An iterative refresh of Raptor Lake-S desktop processors is set to launch in the second half of 2023. However, this refresh will still be considered 13th generation and use the 700 series chipset while Meteor Lake will be designated as 14th generation.

At any rate... my apologies for the confusion OP.

The info that you quoted is false. Meteor Lake is cancelled on the desktop and will be laptop-only. Raptor Lake Refresh will be 14th gen on the desktop.

"Why is a rehash considered new gen?"
We're talking about Intel here. Anything can happen.

Fire up the 12700k platform tonight and boom, a chirpy coil whine noise from Z790 immediately.

I guess this is a pretty common thing with gigabyte mobos. Intel is going back for now.

Should have gone with a different mobo, the 12700k seemed great.
