Picking the right GPU

Hi guys! So I just pulled the trigger on my first PC build. I’m going with an R5 2600 for the cpu but I’m in a bit of a predicament with the GPU. I’ve got a 1070 ti FTW set to be delivered same day as the rest of my components, but I’ve also ordered a 1080 FTW that will be delivered about a week later. The price difference is about $50 but I’m curious if I should even keep my order for the 1080? I really wanna get up and running with the PC and I wonder if the 1080 FTW gains be that much better? Btw my plans for the PC are 1080p gaming/streaming as I don’t have a crazy good monitor... yet. Thanks for your help!

Sounds like a good plan. Assuming one isn't bad or has a bad Asic quality, the 1080 should perform marginally faster at 1080p and the gap should widen more at higher resolutions, which I would recommend you do, since it puts less stress on the CPU and if you plan to stream you'll want as much CPU horsepower as you can get for encoding the stream. I would game at 1440 so your CPU will have less work to do with the game and it can focus more on the encoding and stream at 1080p or 720p depending on quality settings in your streaming software and your...

A 1070 ti is plenty powerful for your needs. A GTX 1080 is only like 5-10% faster than the 1070 ti. and if you have an aftermarket cooler on your 1070 ti a bit of overclocking will get that boy running faster than a stock 1080, I would just refund the 1080 as you won't see much of a difference anyways, but if you just want that little more performance the 1080 can do it, especially when overclocked.

Okay. Just as an FYI, I’m coming from console so I’m sure the 1070ti will blow me away. That being said I’m the type of person that I don’t want my stuff to be outdated and I want to get the best I can. Most of the games I’ll be playing are fortnite, bf4/bf1, and maybe some squad. I am looking at getting a 144hz monitor but I’m thinking if I get the 1070 ti I can put the money I saved toward the monitor. Do you guys think this is a good plan or should I just be patient and wait for the 1080?

Go for the 1070 ti, it will blow your console peasant mind straight out of the water. it should easily runs those games. I know for a fact a 1070 ti can do well over 100 fps in Fortnite on Epic settings (motion blur off)

Hahahaha yes I’m so excited. Okay so this is my only reservation. I’ve got some monitors in my amazon cart that are haunting me. Most of them are 1080 144 but there are a couple that are 1440p. IF I decide to go with one of those. Is the 1080 a better choice to future proof myself or is the different marginal?

If you want to get into higher resolution things like 1440 and 4k the 1080 will be slightly faster as the GPU itself is faster at higher resolutions. As for 1440p the 1070 ti is still very capable even up to 60 fps 4k gaming.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but when they launch gamers and miners alike will have all of Nvidia's overstock sold out in a matter of minutes, so unless our OP here is willing to risk not getting one and having to reorder a then more expensive 10 series card I would advise going for the 1070 ti right now.

I can tell you exactly whats gonna happen after the new cards are sold out, the people that didn't get the new cards are gonna buy the older Pascal cards because that's the only thing available and it will drive the prices back up again.

Yes, I’ve been keeping up with the leaks and I’m sure what you’re saying is true. That’s why I’m buying now over waiting a couple months. Even if I end up paying a bit more than I would waiting until the last minute I’d rather not risk it. I’m also leaning more toward the 1080 FTW. Even though my monitor is severely outdated for it I think it’ll be good to get considering it’s only $50 more and I’ll be able to push more frames if I decide to get a 1440p monitor. Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. This whole community is making me more excited to finally get into PC gaming!

Nice, TBH I would go for the 1080 myself, but that's just because I'm a PC Enthusiast and I like messing with the fastest hardware I can get my hands on. I recommended the 1070 ti because it's still more than fast enough for these next few years to come and shouldn't be too slow to play games until it's well outdated.

Had a quick chat with amazon and I’m going to test out the 1070 ti until the 1080 gets here and then see which one works but I am thinking the 1080 will be the best fit for me.
