Alright. I'm looking for a step by step on how one abuses the piety of
one diety in order to achieve precrownings on another. I got a
character killed by what I thought the obvious path; large useless
level, surround with doors, pray like crazy, and so forth... instead, I
found myself bolted to death. So, if anyone would be so kind as to
provide an idiots guide, so to speak?

Well, that's about right, depending on which god you're pissing off -
gray slayers (neutral) can smash down doors. The islands in Terinyo or
the HMV are also decent choices (in this case not so much for the
chaotics' greater demons because of thier breath attacks)...

I can't think of anyway to outright avoid the bolting. You might just
need enough HP to be able to take the hit and heal up after each bolt.
Weild gold to avoid equipment destruction, and drop anything important
to avoid it beiing cursed.

You MUST have more than 90 hitpoints. There is no way to
avoid damage from the bolts. You usually have to sustain
two bolts before the diety pass on to summoning
Spenseweed will help you greatly. If your pickpocket is
high you can continously use pickpocket on the same target
in Terinyo (I use goodwifes) and quickly go to NC. For
some reason pickpocking them will give a huge chaotic
boost, but you will never go past NC. Then I simply go to
Holeinthewall and kill a neutral enemy (not repeat not a
beggar) to become CN. After that a quick dash to the ID
where I pray until I get the "internal error" message.
Depending on the situation I will usually return the cute
dog corpse to get to NC immidiately and get the first
precrowns right there.

Here's the piety abuse kit for PCs:
for lawfuls, a source of invisibility or darkness
for neutrals, a source of darkness
for chaotics, door creation+locking or an adjacent breeder
for everyone, 100 HP or a Holy Symbol (guaranteed in DT)


The easiest way to abuse piety is to se a holy symbol
when an undead creature is in LOS and successfully [t]urn
it. Every time you turn undead with the holy symbol you use
up piety even when your own god is angry with you. If you
are at starting piety, try turning for ~50 turns and your
god should be really pissed at you.

If you don't have a holy symbol, the PC should be prepared
to survive the appropriate wrath of the diety. Drop all
equipment and inventory except for a missle, useless item,
or 1 gp in the missle slot. Pray and let the missle be
cursed and destroyed and requip another useless item when
necessary. When the god starts bolting you, it's safe to
requip the PC and it's a good idea to put on something that
gives the PC resistance to the bolt.

When the PC's god is sufficiently angered, the PC should be
prepared to survive the summons of the angry god.

Lawfuls and Neutrals have it easy, they can scum the ID for
a darkroom with a staircase or simply cast darkness in the
ID or on a wilderness map. Lawfuls have the most options as
they can simply be invisible in the wilderness and teleport.

A choatic PC with eight charges of door creation and a
method of locking doors can surround him or herself with
locked doors while standing on a staircase and be safe from
the summoned Greater Daemons. A chaotic PC without these
resources can alternatively scum the ID for a breeding monster
such as a chaos rat and have it follow the PC while scumming
for a small room with an undiscovered secret door or locked
door. Have the breeder fill the room and the PC standing on
the stairs can safely pray and escape the level.

Be invisible, permanently or for a long time. Potions are useless for
that purpose. Repeated spell should do.
Have controlled teleportation, you won't be able to get past summoned
horde without it, It is comparable to angered animated forest.
Achieve LN status;
Go into wilderness.
Pray. Eventually solars will be summoned.
Pray some more.
And even more.
Solars can't see invisible so they won't attack you.
Kill one solar. It is fairly strong chaotic act, so if you are
low level you should wear amulet of balance.
If one kill brings you to N= instead of N- or N+, you may kill another
solar.
Now you are neutral and can get precrownings.
Pick up rewards,
teleport to the corner and flee the area.
