Pigment vs Dye Inks

There seems to be a consensus that pigment base inks are more fade
resistant. What are the advantages to dye base inks? Why do most mfg
use a dye base ink system?

Dye based inks are less likely to clog the nozzles. Pigment based inks
require that the pigment never settle out.

Price. Pigment inks require a more expensive print head and the inks
may also be more costly. Although the cost of the raw materials is
insignificant compared to what the cartridges sell for.
Some people feel you can get a greater range of tones with dyes but
the difference, if any, is getting smaller.

Dye inks can provide a larger color gamut. In other words, the
dye based ink prints may be brighter and more saturated looking,
but only last a long time rather than looking a little duller, but
lasting a really long time. Epson, the purveyor of pigment ink
printers also makes a lot of dye based printers too, and it's
interesting to see their sales presentation of those (given the
promo heavily given their pigment printers). It's along the lines
of 'bright wonderful prints' vs 'long lasting great prints'. More
or less. With the markups on ink I don't think cost has anything
to do with it (although patent portfolios might).

But that's only a potential difference, if the photo doesn't have
colors in the "difference band", then it won't matter -- just as
it won't matter if one gets tired of a properly framed print
after 20 years and is going to toss it out anyway. 🙂

That must be the reason HP Carts cost more in addition to just putting a
print head in them.

Dye based inks have much smaller colorant sizes. This allows for for much
smaller droplet size, without any problems, eg. without clogging. Only
recently one manufacturer (Epson) learnt to manufacture small droplet size
with pigmented inks.
