PIII/133 on on 100 bus?

New to forum because I want to get expert advice. I was reading Tom's How To Make Your PC 5 Times Faster, and I got a little confused about the selecting PIII at 133MHz or PIII at 100MHz.
My board (ASUS P2B-D) can jumper up to 112MHz (as far as I can tell) at FSB and I can only get 8.5x on CPU jumpers (I think). I am currently running PIII/850MHz Slot 1's.
I want to go to 1GHz+, but am limited to (currently) 1GHz on the Slot 1. Using a FCPGA adapter will work fine, but most 1GHz+ processors (there is a 1.10GHz/100 FCPGA processor) are using 133MHz bus.
My question is: Can I use a 133MHz processor (as Tom's guide shows) on this 100MHz bus MB?

Thanks for your help.

You can install FSB133 CPU in your board but as long as you cannot set FSB133 by jumbers or bios CPU won't run at full speed. Its speed is FSB*multiplier. PIIIs have multiplier locked so you don't have to worry about that. Your mobo doesn't have to provide proper multiplier (CPU ignores it) but it has to provide correct FSB speed.

Hi,
There is a complete explanation about basics on FSB, multiplier, overclocking and RAM settings at http://www.tweaktown.com/document.php?dType=guide&dId=19

Using a 133MHz FSB processor at 100MHz FSB will make it go 25% slower, for example the 1000EB is 7.5x133, at 7.5x100 becomes a 750. I don't know what the jumper setting would be to get 133MHz, since your dual motherboard does not have the fourth FSB jumper (FS3), but you could try experimentation, or overclocking software. Otherwise I would suggest the PIII 850, overclocked to 952MHz using the 112 MHz FSB.

What's the frequency, Kenneth?

I have a P2B-D. What revision is your board? It will be written between the PCI slots.

There is a PIII-1000E but they are hard to find and expensive.

Anyways. The 850E at 112FSB give you ~950.

If your board is rev 1.06 D03 it will do 133FSB with a 1/4 PCI divider. Your AGP will be running at 89MHz 'tho. *Most* P2B-D 1.06 D03 boards will do this, but you are sacrificing stability and probably life.

I don't think it's worth paying that kind of money to get the extra 50Mhz in speed.

I run two PIII-800E @ ~900 (112FSB).

If you want expert advice on a dual system hop on over to http://www.2cpu.com.

check your board rev and the manuals. if your board is too old it wont support 133 MHz FSB, but you have nothing to loose, get it to 112 and run the processor at 952 MHz!

1100/100 processor is there, but I would suggest you against it. I dont know about the US, we get it here in India in tray pack, much cheaper than the box pack PIII 866 MHz, and has about 25% failure.

And if you use a 133 MHz processor on your board, it will run 25% slower, at 100 MHz FSB x whatever the multipler! And get a good adapter that will allow you to change the core voltage to get most of the PIII range working. If your board does support 133 MHz FSB then you might want to consider the PL-iP3T which will allow you to run the latest Tualatin versions of the PIII processor! Your board is probably compatible with the device since the P2B-DS is listed (and so should be the P2B-D/L/LS since they are the same board) but for the revision of the motherboard.

The revision is 1.06 (had older w2k/solder-problem board, but got it exchanged). Thx for the info on the 133 v. 100 decrease, sure makes sense. There is absolutely no way I can get this board to 133, so 112 is the max. I'll give the bump a try.
What is a 1/4 PCI divider? I'm not familiar with this.
I did see a PIII/1.10GHz/100MHz (FCPGA) here at www.spartantech.com for $147. Paired with SLOCKET's, think this might work?
I need just a little more power to speed up some compiling.

Thx!! I'll hit the 2cpu.com site as well.

The 133FSB jumper setting isn't listed, but I have it somewhere. I'll dig it up if you want it.

The "normal" PCI bus runs at 33MHz. A computer with a 100FSB has a 1/3 divider for the PCI bus. At 133FSB you need a 1/4 divider to get 33MHz.

Yes, those chips will work with slockets, but won't o/c much at all. You won't really notice any price difference going to 1000E chips. If you want more then you're looking at the Tualatin chips, but they will run you US$400+ EACH, and then you need the special powerleap slockets. And then you need to run at 133FSB.

You'd be better off buying a new system if you need more speed.
