Ping Not Reflecting Speed Test

We have purchased a new Modem/Router in our house today. After using a 6 year old modem and 4 year old router, we upgraded to the Netgear N300 DGN2200v2. Everything works well, except for my bad latency. Since then, I have been getting horrible ping when playing games, greater than 200, often going up to 300-400 for a while when connecting to servers in my country (Australia), when I used to get about 40 with the old modem and router setup. I can change settings in the N300 if necessary. Greatly appreciated!

PS: Forgot to add my speedtest results. http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3740538356 (Yes, I know, the Down/Up speeds are bad, but it's the best I can get in my area.

Solution
Ping is the time to send a packet and get a response.
For speedtest that is just a simple ICMP packet.
In games "ping" is more complicated. It is affected by the speed of your computer, the speed of the server and the network bandwidth in between.
Ping in games will always be higher than ping in speedtest.

Your download speed is fine, upload is not great.
Make sure nothing is running on your network that could be hogging your upload bandwidth (e.g BitTorrent).
Have your speed test results changed with the new router?
Have you changed any of your cables or put in surge protection?

My upload is not great - I know. I'm still on the same internet plan as I was before switching the setup. The upload is about the same as last time, if not better, and I could run games fine.
Nothing is running in the background that wasn't running before I changed my setup. I am not using any torrenting programs.
Nope, they have not changed at all. At least not in the speed test.
Cables have been changed. I should mention that I am using a wireless connection that is better than my last router, so that isn't the problem. There is a surge protector connected.

I mean surge protection on the phone line going in to the router. While this is a great idea, it often causes connection problems.
Wireless should generally be faster than your internet connection, but will introduce some latency.
What sort of ping were you seeing in games on the old router?

Oh, sorry, no surge protection on the actual line. In the region I'm in, these are the best speeds I can get. I was getting 40-odd latency with the old modem + router setup (which you would think would have more latency) when connecting to Australian game servers, but now when connecting to the same one, I am getting more than 200 all the time.

I'm in Sydney on ADSL 2 so I know the problems of internet in Australia. I'm lucky to be close to the exchange.
To rule out the wireless, plug in with a cable if you can and test.
How long has this been an issue? Your ISP could just be having a bad day.
Have you tried other games and seen the same problem?
Does your ISP have their own game servers?
