my fire wall log for my router says ping of death then the persons IP address to my IP address has been dropped, does that mean the attack never made it thru my firewall?

Solution
Even without a firewall traffic coming from the internet will be stopped by your router......because it is really stupid. Actually this is the NAT part of the router. Unless you tell it via port mapping or DMZ what traffic needs to be sent to what machine it does not know and throws away any garbage traffic including most attack traffic.

What the firewall will do is protect the router/firewall itself from attack but it can only do so much. If someone is trying to send you lots of data it still uses up all your bandwidth even though it never reaches you internal machines.
