PingPlotter Pack Loss on Hop

Hello Forum,

I've been battling a network problem for some time.On my phone and even my friends I'll be loading a page and it just stops loading and if I jump off wifi and switch to 4g the page loads. I game from time to time so I can tell if the network is good or bad via Netgraph (Packet Loss, Ping etc). And it seems like on games Ill go from a steady 30-40ms to a spike of 80-90ms for about 3 seconds and it goes back to normal 30-40ms.

I have called Xfinity and they sent out a tech to check the lines and they ran some test and said everything is good . So I downloaded PingPlotter to see if any packet loss is happening.

That is because you are misinterprenting the results. Routers in the path are many times designed to give ping/icmp low priority. If they are busy passing actually data they will delay or ignore ping packets.

Lets say a node in a path was reporting 100% packet loss then nothing could ever go past it. It is the same a lower loss rates. A actual problem would show loss starting in one node and then continuing to the end. All that really matters is the response to the end node if you see no issue on the end node then you can ignore stuff in the path.

On your issue I would disable the IPv6 support in your pc or your router. The 4g connection is likely using only ipv4

Thanks for the reply.

This happens when i'm on Ethernet too.

Dropping crappy xfinity gig speed. Neighbor down the street has att fiber and has no packet loss on any Hop
 
You are going to have to do more testing to see where the problem is the trace you provided shows no issues.

I would still try disabling the IPv6. There is much more internet connections using IPv4 and it is simpler to troubleshoot rather than having some sites use ipv4 and others use ipv6.

You will see just as many people complaining about att so it is purely luck if your connection has issues or not.

I see some of the Hop(s) have lag spikes, and it gets worse if I use the internet while the test is going on.

Again the intermediate hops mean nothing.

You get traffic to the end node without any packet loss and almost no jitter.

Think of it this way if these routers were traffic lights and one was broken and delayed everyone you would not still arrive with no delay to your office in the morning. It pretty much means the data that show one is broken is false in some way.

When you see no issues to the final hop the path it takes means nothing. You need to show packet loss and delays to the final hop.

Still even if it did cause a issue what can you possibly do about it. One of your traces shows issue with hops with equipment not in your ISP but in level3 network. You are not a level3 customer so they will not even talk to you.

This is looking more and more like a problem with your PC than with the network. Pretty much the only thing you will easily get the ISP to fix is if you are getting errors on the connection between your house and the ISP office.

Your largest issue is you have to get testing tools that actually show your problem. The tools you show actually show the network is NOT the problem. They show you have no issue at all communicating with the end servers.

I am not saying your are not having issues with the game but the problem is likely more complex. It very well could be certain ip blocks do show loss but you have to be careful if it is too far into the network your ISP will claim it is the game company ISP causing the problem.
