Hi I have a dvd drive and have installed a dvd writer. Should the dvd writer
be the slave and the dvd drive be the master or does it not matter?
Currently the DVD drive is the master and the DVD writer is the slave.

Also in device properties under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers Secondary IDE
Channel Properties Advanced settings Device 0 has Transfer Mode DMA if
available with Current Transfer Mode as PIO Mode and Device 1 Transfer Mode
DMA if
available and Current Transfer Mode Ultra DMA Mode 2.

When I had Windows 98 I am sure that the Pioneer DVD-ROM DVD-113 was
working in DMA mode but I am not certain as I never paid much attention. It
is just that if I am copying a DVD from the Pioneer DVD-ROM DVD-113 to the
writer it takes about an hour to read the DVD to the hard disk whereas a
friend can do the same thing in about 15 mins on a computer with a processor
half the speed of mine and half the memory.

I have done what has been suggested in the knowledge base about changing the
settings but it always reverts back to PIO mode.

The motherboard is an MSI MS-6738(v1.X) Micro X and the DVD drive is a
Pioneer DVD-ROM DVD-113 and the DVD writer is an NEC DVD_RW ND-2500A. I
have all the latest updates for the motherboard using the MSI live update
from the MSI website.

Hi Tricia

Well you can make the writer the master and dvd slave but
you have different hardware and even though someone may
not have a pc as your where it is faster, you still have a lot
of variables. Granted his pc maybe not as fast as yours but
you do have different parts which is something to look at.

Normally, to enable Ultra DMA trnasfer modes, you need to install the
motherboard chipset drivers. These drivers are normally shipped with the
motherboard. If not, they should be downloadable from MSI's web site. XP
only gives us DMA/PIO access drivers.

Also, you need to have a Ultra DMA ide cable. The Ultra DMA ide cable has 80
wires and 40 pin connectors. The extra wires help to shield the signal on
the cable..

Hi,

Usually DVD-rom is faster than DVD R/W.
My 3 years old Asus 16X DVD-rom has DMA mode 5 but my new Plextor 712A 12X
DVD R/W only has DMA mode 2 (it is by design as higher DMA mode may cause
burning problems)
Connect the faster drive to master and the slower drive to slave.
I use 80pin shielded cable for both drives.
If you are sure that both of your optical drives is DMA mode 2 by design,
you can just use 40 pin cable. (80 pin shielded cable is required for DMA
mode 3 and above)

Make sure you have enabled DMA mode in BIOS for the primary and secondary
IDE channels otherwise you cannot set it to DMA mode in device manager.
Also check the jumper setting of the drives, you cannot set to cable select
by using a 40 pin cable.

Hi,

Recently I became aware of that my PX-712A runs in PIO mode under XP
Pro although running in DMA Mode under Win98 SE on the same system
(Dual-Boot).

My Plextor DVD writer is connected as secondary slave. The secondary
master device is a Pioneer DVD-120 running in DMA Mode with no problem
(It must be an Ultra DMA 66 device. But Pioneer told me it IS DMA33).

I think XP turned off the DMA Mode for my PX-712A. I have no problems
when burning 8x DVD's, but didn't try any 12x media.

Plextor Technical Support adviced me to connect the Plextor as a
master alone to the secondary IDE channel.

Any suggestions, please.
