Placed new WiFi PCIe card in to my PC, now my GPU has stopped working

This has been driving me around for hours. I literally have spent 4 or so hours trying to fix this. It was all working fine, but my WiFi card was giving me some grief so I went to put a spare in. Didn't really think too much about it and did it whilst it was on. My computer was running fine still, however the card wasn't being picked up by windows so I restarted it. After I had done this, my GPU just would not respond.

As soon as I press the power button, the GPU fans spin for about half a second or so. After that, there is no response. No output either, however it does still get warm. I checked the card without any power cables in and just plugged into the MB and it has electricity running though it. Both the 6 pin connectors have the correct voltage. It is placed firmly in the PCIe MB. I have no idea why it suddenly won't work.

I have disassembled the entire PC, plugging only the CPU, GPU and PSU in, same issue. I have the back of the GPu off and cleaned with cotton buds, no luck there. Tried different 6,pin connector, however only have the one pcie 16 slot.I cannot get it to start for more than half a second, and there is no output. I can still access my PC through the onboard graphics however I am a gamer so this isn't that helpful. Windows doesn't even recognize that the graphics card is there! Its been working fine for about a year or so, not sure what the issue is.

Did you plug the GPU into the mother board while powered on? It looks like that is what you are saying in the first paragraph but I want to make sure that is what you meant.

I plugged the PCIe WiFi card in whilst it was on, not really thinking too smart at the time.

I've updated the BIOS and reset the CMOS and everything. I am working and typing this on that same PC now, but using the integrated graphics!

Ouch, ok well as long as you now know that was ill advised and know to never do anything like that again.

Now as for the issue, do you have access to another GPU to test if its the PCI Express slot? That would be my next step in troubleshooting this, get another card and see if you can get it to post. If it does then you will most likely need another GPU, but the motherboard is ok. If no signal to the monitor with the other GPU installed then there is a good chance that the PCI slot on the motherboard is fried and you will need another mobo.

Ordered the new graphics card to be delivered tomorrow. It was extremely cheap (£20) just so I can check the PCIe slot. How would my GPU suddenly stop working? The fact is spins for half a second as soon as the power is switched on baffles me, as if it was fried surely it would not be doing anything?

My guess is static discharge from your hand damaged either the slot or the GPU.

Actually fans spinning on a damaged PCB is pretty common. Motherboards will do that sometimes when they malfunction, the fans spin but nothing else happens.

Yet I can still use the computer with the integrated graphics, just weird. I didn't touch the GPU with my hand at all, the only thing that did was the PCIe WiFi card, on accident of course.

Edit: Also, the GPU still worked and the WiFi card wasn't detected so I rebooting, never worked since.
