Hi everyone,

new hardware is overdue as I'm currently still using a 7700k and an RX5700 and I think the time has finally come. My first question would be if you think now is a good time to upgrade or should I wait maybe until after Christmas or even longer (Ryzen 8000 series)?

This is what I had in mind so far:

CPU: Ryzen7 7800x3d - 366€
Cooler: Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE - 43€
Mobo: MSI MAG B650 TOMAHAWK WIFI - 211€
RAM: G.Skill Flare X5 32 GB DDR5-6000 CL32 Memory - 123€
SSD: Western Digital Black SN770 2TB M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 X4 - 105€
Case: Corsair 4000D Airflow ATX Mid Tower Case - 90€
PSU: Corsair RM750e (2023) 750 W 80+ Gold Certified - 120€

GPU: Not sure here. Either a RX6800 - 408€ for now because the price/performance is supposed to be very good and i upgrade later to a 7900xtx - 990€ when the prices are a bit better and sell the RX6800. Or i go straight for the 7900xtx if we can't assume that the prices will drop significantly in the next few months. I could afford the bigger GPU but then i would be broke.

I'm also not entirely sure about the Mobo especially with the 7800x3d. The SOC voltage problem on release should be known to most and after what ASUS pulled off the manufacturer isn't really an option imo but i'm open to suggestions. As stable and safe as possible would be my preference.

I don't plan to overclock and would like to use 1 - 2 ssd without affecting the gpu. I also use a X-56 hotas and 5.1 sound system. I don't need wifi or any extra features

The system is meant for gaming only. Mainly simulations like Star Citizen and Arma but also RPGs like Witcher 4 or Cyberpunk

I would be grateful for any tips and suggestions

Nice build. Only suggestion i have is upping the psu wattage a bit, 850w minimum. Just to be more comfortable with transient spikes if you were to get 7900xtx or any power hungry card you may upgrade in future, to cover all basis.

Amd recommends 800w.

HXi, also ATX 3.0, has 10yr warranty as apose to 7yrs offered from RMe series and uses the better Japanese capacitors instead of Taiwanese. Pricey but you'll be in good hands.

Regarding SoC voltage and Msi board, has been fixed since 28/4 bios update.

Should be able to search or email Msi support the serial number to determine which bios revision it has. Might need to use Flashback anyway to gain cpu support. If your cpu is supported from box (hopefully it is) you'll be fine checking bios revision inside bios and update if necessary.

I would suggest looking for a B650E mobo for B650 mobo with pcie 5.0 ssd support.

The Gigabyte Aorus elite, Asrock riptide are such mobo with good VRMs.

update the mobo bios and you dont need to worry about the CPU frying with overvoltage.

I am guessing the 7800XT is about 500 euros there? by jan end you would have info about 4070 super. expecting a 500 USD price launch to counter AMD's 7800XT.

as for SSD and PSU:

look for a tier a ATX 3.0 PSU.

Many thanks for the advice. I've already made some changes to the system
  • CPU: Ryzen7 7800x3d - 366€
  • Cooler: Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 - 38€
  • RAM: Corsair Vengeance 32 GB DDR5-6000 CL30 - 127€
  • Mobo: MSI MAG B650 TOMAHAWK WIFI - 187€ (with cashback)
  • Mobo Alt: Gigabyte B650 AORUS ELITE AX - 243€
  • PSU: be quiet! Pure Power 12 M 850 W 80+ Gold - 126€
  • Case: Fractal Design North - 140€
  • GPU: XFX Speedster MERC 310 Black Edition Radeon RX 7900 XT 20 GB - 800€
  • SSD: Kingston KC3000 2.048 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 X4 - 117€
As far as the mobo is concerned, the PCIe 5.0 SSD support is a good point. However with the MSI cashback promotion that would be a price difference of about 50€. Would you say thats worth it for a gaming only system considering that the Teamgroup Z540 2TB - 302€ is still too expensive imo?

Also do you have a reliable source for me where i can find out more about VRMs or the overall quality of B650 mobos?

Edit: I guess you would choose the the Gigabyte Aorus elite as you use it yourself. Would you say it is a good stable combination with the Corsair Vengeance 32 GB DDR5-6000 CL30 and the 7800x3d?

Thank you in advance

Pcie 5 Nvme isn't common on B650 boards. There might be one or two out there but most are supported on x670. 7th gen Ryzen has 24 pcie 5 lanes so you won't be eating into graphics lanes like what happens on Intel 13th gen having only 16 pcie 5 lanes. 14th gen upped that to 20.

Tough choices. Gigabyte AX looks appealing. Msi only has 1 M2 heatsink. Their more expensive motherboards have multiple heatsinks though. I wish they provided complete heatsink coverage with all models.

Asus tuf plus b650 also has pcie 5.0 ssd support.

For mobo vrm, you would have to go the product page and see. Look for 12 stage vrm phase minimum with 60 a capacitors.

The pcie 5.0 ssd support is for your future upgrades. The kc3000 is a good ssd, go for it.

The b650 would support next gen cpu upgrades. So you will have the mobo for atleast 5 years. And this mobo would support the pcie 5.0 ssd upgrade in that time.

The GIGABYTE X670 Gaming X AX is on sale here (250€) for pretty much the same price as the B650-E mobos.

Compared to the GIGABYTE X670 AORUS Elite AX, I hardly notice any difference. The only thing I see is
8-layer 2X Copper PCB vs 6-layer 2X Copper PCB for the VRM (not sure what that means), 1x 4-pin RGB header more on the Elite and the cooling seems a little bit better

What do you think of the GIGABYTE X670 Gaming X AX for 250€?
https://www.gigabyte.com/de/Motherboard/X670-GAMING-X-AX-rev-10#kf

There is a v2 version for the same price but it seems slightly worse VRM related or am i wrong here

v1:
VRM18 virtual phases (16+2), 10 real phases (8+2), PWM-Controller: XDPE192C3 (max. 12 Phases)

MOSFETs CPU (VCORE)16x 70A TDA21472

MOSFETs SoC (VCCGT)2x 60A NCP303160

v2:
VRM16 virtual phases (14+2), 9 real phases (7+2), PWM-Controller: XDPE192C3B (max. 12 Phases)

MOSFETs CPU (VCORE)14x 60A NCP303160

MOSFETs SoC (VCCGT)2x 60A NCP303160

A few things. If you plan on upgrading to something such as the RX 7900 XT 20GB later on then look at an 850W psu. Also the Corsair 4000D is a hose job. You get a single 120mm front intake fan with that case along with a 120mm exhaust fan. Look at the Fractal Design Focus 2 that comes with two 140mm front intake fans. Add a 120mm exhaust fan to that case.
