My current CPU is a 6600k and I'm looking for a performance boost as well as more cores. I was these two come out to near the same price, the 6700k is more expensive bit i wouldn't need to buy a new motherboard. You might tell me to look at Ryzen for more cores but afaik those chips will barely run better than my 6600k. So, which of these will give me the better value?

Solution
6700k cost more than 7700k, and offer less performance.

performance wise, 7700k> 6700k (stock, ipc is about same, but 7700k overclock better) , in terms of 6700k/7700k and 8600k are very similar.

it does cost lest, that is weird to me, either way does the bios update thing really work with every brand?

I would get the 8600k, it will cost more because of the motherboard/RAM, but it is newer tech and you get six-cores. The OC results on the 8600k are also better.

At default speeds, single threading performance will probably be the same between 6700k and 8600k, but I expect the multi-core to be better on the 8600k.

6700k is higher, because it's discontinued, it should work for most of the board, what mobo do you have currently?

z370 board + 8600k cost more than 7700k (i assume op has a z170 board), and the performance gain is very questionable.
