Planning for 2nd Monitor but current one only connects to Graphics Card

So I want to buy another monitor for dual screening, but my current monitor will only display if it is connected to my graphics card. So I'm wondering if I should get a specific cable or monitor in order for me to use both monitors because my graphics card only has one slot and there is no VGA slot.

You'll need a graphics card with two ports. And a splitter cable will only duplicate the display on both screens, which I doubt you want.

Ugh, would that mean I need to buy another graphics card then? I mean what is the point for the port on the motherboard then?

The port on the motherboard is for if there is no graphics card installed, because then it uses the CPU's integrated graphics. However, there are some sources that claim it is possible to use two monitors with the motherboard's also, though I highly doubt it's likely with VGA. You can Google it if you want more information, but more than likely you'll have to buy a GPU with two ports.

How old is your GPU? most all today come with two or more ports.

What is your motherboard and CPU? You can enable the GPU on modern CPUs and use the motherboard port.

But all modern GPUs also support two monitors. If it's a very old system it may not be able to.

I just made this PC and don't much about making them or how they work. I also wouldn't know how to enable the GPU in the first place.

A 980ti obviously supports multiple monitors. Buy any monitor with dvi, hdmi or display port.

And you can enable the motherboard GPU in the BIOS although there is no reason to. If you feel so inclined read your motherboard manual
