I am planning to buy EVGA GeForce GTX 1070 . However I am in doubt that whether I will get good performance in 4K in my current configuration after adding 1070. My Current Configuration:
  • Core i5-4430 (3years old)
Asus b85m-e/csm matx Motherboard (3years old)
    DDR3 8GB 1333 (3years old)
Silverstone Strider Essential 600W 80+ (1.5 years old)
Initially I was thinking of building a whole new pc but my friend suggested that my current processor is good enough for getting good performance in 4K. What do you guys suggest? Should I do a new build with a 6th generation i5 processor and motherboard with new 1070 gpu or the existing config is good enough with 1070.

I do not understand the bottlenecking stuff. Could you please clarify?

I read that a 1070 will get you about 30 FPS at 4K. Is that what you want?

Bottleneck is a kind of hardware limitation in your computer. A bottleneck occurs when the capacity of an application or a computer system is severely limited by a single component. Components that often bottleneck are graphic card, processor and HDD. Bottlenecks affect microprocessor performance by slowing down the flow of information back and forth from the CPU and the memory. If all of the components of a system are not able to feed the same amount of data at the same speed, a delay is created. For example, a 2GB processor will be severely bottlenecked by an 800MB memory bandwidth.

If you don't understand what i am saying maybe you should watch this video

4k performance can vary by the game.
My suggestion is to first, buy your 4k monitor and see how you do.

Then, do some testing.

Run YOUR games, but lower your resolution and eye candy.
If your FPS increases, it indicates that your cpu is strong enough to drive a better graphics configuration and a stronger graphics card should work for you.

OTOH, If your FPS stays the same, you are likely more cpu limited and a cpu upgrade first is in order.

I am looking for 60fps in general. I guess 30FPS at 4K with 1070 is with ultra settings of the game?

Your i5 really isn't the best with the 1070....an i3 will bottleneck a gtx 1060 and an i5 will bottleneck a gtx 1070....

I would recommend you to make a new build with an i7 6th generation processor 12 gb ram and a new motherboard....that psu should be good....

If you really want 60 fps in 4k, go for a gtx 1080....but then your budget will have to be pretty damn high

Yah. with i7 motherboard ram and 1080 it would be like 2000 Canadian $ or more 🙁

Some time ago, I bought a 4k monitor, a 40" Philips bdm4065UC.
I was not getting 60fps in my games which was primarily civ 4/5.
At the time, I had a GTX780. I upgraded to a GTX980ti which was the strongest at the time, but not as strong as today's GTX1070.
It now plays just fine.

One thing to consider is that 4k resolution has many more pixels so there is less need to have high levels of aa.

aa is one of the more demanding settings and you can reduce it with no impact visually.

Dank tech - No, in general, a well sorted i5 won't bottleneck a 1070....that one might though, OP, due to lower clocks and inability to OC.

The 1070 is superb, with my 6600k the ONLY game at 2560x1080 that causes issues is Watch Dogs 2, whereby 100% cpu usage is constant and I get gpu usage drops in cities causing fps drops. Generally ok. This is known and even i7s struggle at times.

OP I would be cautious as a number of games I see 80-90% on the cpu.... You'll likely see pegged at 100%

Depends on the games you play.

Oh and 8gb of 1333....not going to help either. A number of games like 16gb really, and faster ram at that. I've seen noticeable differences between 2133 and 3000mhz wrt RAM speed. Always affect min fps (WD2, FALLOUT, witcher 3, far cry 4)

oh sorry, missed that first sentence

Thanks a lot for the suggestions. Looks like I need to do a new build with core i7 and 1080 if I really want to fully utilize my new Samsung 4K HDR TV with 4K gaming 🙁

two 1080's with an overclocked i7 if you want higher settings with at least +30 fps on newer games

Wait....just wait.....if i am sure, the secret "project scorpio" is gonna be released in late 2017....if you can wait for one more year you can buy this.

Project scorpio: - http://

So guys, in summary if I have a core i5 - 6500, 16gb ddr4 ram with a 1070 PC then I would be able to play most games in 1440p with high settings (not ultra). Am I roughly correct?
