I have no idea what this is called, but it's a plastic shroud type of thing that connects to the rear exhaust fan under the power supply unit. It bends and opens right over the cpu/heatsink. It helps to either vent the hot air from the processor or channel cool air directly to it. Does anyone have a link to where I could buy one of these things?

Sounds like you have a Dell computer. Or some other proprietary deal.

No.

You can build one yourself if you get some PVC and use a dremel on it. Or a skillsaw, or sawzall.

SOunds like you have an old PC too.
They dont really sell such things anymore.
you CAN get short fan ducts from case mod shops, but the best place may be from second hand parts stores.

I actually saw it in my roomate's new computer. I don't remember if it's a Dell or not, but it is some kind of big-name-brand-pre-built rig.

It kinda looks like this, except it attached to the 80mm case fan instead of the heatsink fan.

How come these things aren't popular anymore? They seem like a very good idea to me.

i told know what the one in the picture is for, but the thing i think your talking about is on dells, all it does is suck the hot air from the cpu to the outside so it doesnt build up in the case, that way they dont need to put in a case fan. this wouldnt work on a real computer with a fast hard drive and video card.
