Question Platform switch on a budget of $420

I'm selling my old x299 motherboard on ebay and somebody wants to buy my i5 7640x with it. Originally I was going to use the money from the old motherboard to buy a 7900x. I use my pc for gaming, and alot of people said I should switch platforms instead of upgrading the cpu. My budget is $420 if this person actually buys the cpu and motherboard for the price I want. What platform should I switch to? If I'm switching platforms, then I want a similar or better cpu than the 7900x.

I can get the 7900x for $320

I shouldn't need new ram. The ram I have is compatible with H370 X299 Z170 Z270 Z370 and z390.

I'm not really sure what all of those are but I think the 9900k uses z370.

You're right about the RAM.

By the way the 9900k compared to a 7900x in games isn't that big of a difference. I don't think spending 420 dollars to get that increase is worth it.

If you are going to buy new cpu + board.. go with i7 10700K + Z490 board... May be you will get them both at 500$.. at that cpu actually performs better than i9 9900K in games with some overclocking..

Or jump right on Ryzen 7 5700 with B550 board....

Is the ryzen 5000 series the newest? I dont know what the numbers mean in AMD.

Do you mean 5800? Not much comes up when I google 5700

There is no Ryzen 5700X.

Yes Ryzen 5000 is the newest CPU that was released. 5600X, 5800X, 5900X, 5950X.

For that jump you need a B550/X570 board with the new Ryzen 5000 CPU and unless you already have 3200/3600MHz RAM you will need to buy RAM.
