I finally became curious enough to research PSU's and found that the platinum gold, etc. was a measure of efficiency. Does the higher efficiency also mean a proportionally longer service life?

Solution
Longer life will depend more on capacitor's quality. Normally, inside a brand, higher efficiency tent to be related to higher build quality, but this is not necessarily like this, and you cannot compare two different brands based on efficiency rate.

If you want to buy a new PSU you can tell us your budget, the rest of your system, and the place where you live/store where you can or want to buy it, and we will try to help you find the best one.
Yes - but not because its necessarily higher quality but because higher efficiency = less electricity converted to heat = runs cooler -> lasts longer.

There are cases where a 80+ silver may last less than a reputable 80+ bronze or 80+ psu.

Adding on to emdea22:

From what I've heard, Platinum vs. Gold isn't much of a difference. So going with Gold instead of platinum to save money is still a great choice.

Solution
All responses were good. When I posed the question, I was thinking more of the mechanical aspects, bearings etc. I finally bought a Corsair Cx500M.
It was a carbon copy of my first build...still working after 7 years.
Thanks to all.
