Definitely too little, way too late.
The engin its built on is trash, the mobile version is actually a better game and its so limited in scope that other more established companies are going to crush it.
It was a good idea that was poorly executed and with all the money they made, they basically killed it themselves by not re-investing in the game to keep it on top.

Just curious about the statement that PUBG started the battle royale genre. How does this compare with deathmatch modes in games like Quake 2 [which was my introduction to online gaming]?

It's not fair to blame the engine - both PUBG and Fortnite are built on UE4.

The implementation of PUBG is an issue. However the superior experience of Fortnite in many areas demonstrates that it is fixable.

If 'Battle Royale' is broadly defined as 'a last man standing game mode in which all players begin with no weapons, and the play zone periodically decreases in size', then it is hard to think of any earlier games that had those specific features, other than the other Player Unknown developments.
