Bought an LG external drive for my notebook. Came with a install cd. Went through the process. Connected the external drive, put the movie in. I can see the movie title on the screen, but when I push play - it doesn't do anything. Am I missing something?

Where are you plugging the external HDD when attempting to play that movie? I'd suggest you to try using a different computer or a different USB port and see if that will help. Another thing worth doing is checking Disk Management on your notebook to see how the external appears there.
If you have any important data on it, I'd suggest you to back it up somewhere else or on your notebook and try re-formatting the external HDD. Sometimes a simply re-format solves such mysteries.
