Playing Enemy Territory locks up computer hard!

I just installed Enemy Territory (v1.02 patch as well) in Windows XP
Professional SP2 (all updates). I configured the graphics to all
details up to maximum at 1152x864 resolution. I can play for about five
minutes or more (nice FPS; 50+ FPS). Then, my computer locks up HARD
(can't even ping my XP machine from another box)!

I did hear the sound stutter for about 2 seconds and mutes when
computer locked up hard. I see no graphic glitches on screen. CPU
temperature seems OK (133 degrees(F) was the highest according to BIOS
after the reboot from hard lock up). I doubt it is heat related because
other games (e.g., Far Cry, DOOM 3, Guild Wars, etc.) and cpuburn do
not lock up even during heat waves (85 degrees in my room; CPU had been
up to 142).

I also noticed relaunching ET sets me back to 800x600 resolution and
some video settings were reverted back to defaults. 🙁

I am using an Athlon 64 3200+ with 1GB of RAM, ASUS K8V SE Deluxe (1004
firmware), Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS (latest driver), Catalyst driver
v4.10, etc.

Do you have any ideas what is up? I don't know if this is related to
the video driver, sound driver, etc. I already had Fast Write disabled.
Windows' Event Viewer log doesn't show anything. No memory dumps either
(no blue screens I guess).

Thank you in advance. :)

I see you posted using "tin"..., so you should know that the likely cause
is Windoze itself, more specifically SP2 probably...

Why not install the Linux version, and play that way? Why would you
want to play in Windoze?

Go back to the 4.9 drivers. There is a major bug in the new ATI driver that
makes your computer hardlock when you try to play a opengl game with PB.

On a Pentium 3 600 Mhz with 384 MB of RAM and a Matrox G400 video card?
I don't think so. 😉

Wow, how in the world did ATI missed this? I played on a non-PB server,
and no lock ups!!

Just downloading the 49 drivers.

Or even better, use Omega drivers:
http://www.omegadrivers.net/

Yeah, I had downloaded ATI's latest and greatest when I recently installed
my 9700 AIW. It had trouble detecting the card so it wouldn't install
automatically. Had to do a manual driver update to each component (video,
theatre, WDM's, etc.) Playing FarCry with everything set to high, the game
was not even playable. More choppy than a food processor. Then I
discovered Omega drivers. When I did the update of the video drivers, it
also updated the other components automatically so I only had to do it once.
FarCry was so much smoother even though it is theoretically the same drivers
:>) Plus, there is an overclocking utility and includes a provision to
activate AI even though ATI's drivers have to use their bloated Control
Centre to activate it, not available in the old Control Panel.
